I have a modem error but it shows some MAC addresses.  Should I post this on the forum or is it a security risk?

I would check the cable modem lines going out side the house and to the telephone pole or a hub.
Do you have any in line cable splitters? It's preferred to not use them if possible or only use one and make it a good quality one if you need a splitter on the line.

Yes, we do have a splitter and they ran a brand new line to the house when I did the switchover last month.

However, they are using our existing coax cables from DirecTV which are about 3 years old.

Those cables that are 3 years old in the house? I would try as a test to remove the splitter if you can do that. I have a dedicated cable line here for Internet. I would try running a new cable in house to the modem and check with out a splitter.

Done!  I took the splitter off the modem and ran the phone and TV off the splitter.  We hardly use the land line anyway.

I'll monitor it for now.  There must be another splitter outside the house though, so it was going through 2 splitters, now it's just one.

What's a good power level for a modem?  IIRC, before I did the splitter fix, it was at 3 to 5dbmv and now it's at -3dbmv.

I would call up and ask a tech for your ISP. I presume there are some standards out there however they might be different. They should be able to tell you. I would get ahold of 2nd level tech support if 1st level can't answer.

Your right, signal levels CAN be different for different places, most of the time signal standards are pretty even across the board. So yea, call your ISP, but reinforce what they say with your own research. A outline below should help.

Downstream Power Level: -10 to +5. As close to 0 as possible.
DS SNR: Atleast above 27. 32-36 is better. The higher the better.
Upstream Power Level:Below 50. 42-46 is the sweet spot.
US SNR: You will have to call your ISP for this. Can vary depending on what QAM they are using.

BTW, any error message with your MAC is probably a DHCP error, and not all that critical. Atleast in in itself.

Mine are falling into the "good" range Harry listed, except for my Upstream Power Level.  It's at 35.00.

So far no errors since removing that splitter.

By itself, it doesn't mean you have a issue. Was it enough to actually cause a connection issue? Think of it like a scratch on a CD. Scratches on CD aren't good, but just because you have a few scratches, doesn't mean it's going to skip.
