Being Kicked off on a constant basis
« on: March 18, 2011, 01:08:58 PM »

I have had my DGL-4500 for about 2 years now. I recently upgraded from 1.02 to 1.23 NA. I saved my setting to a thumbdrive and upgraded bit by bit, allowing the router to reset every time i upgraded.  Once it was to 1.23NA, I uploaded my settings, and things were going well. Now for the past few weeks, I have been constantly been kicked off ever few minutes. I have a roommate who shares my router and has the same problem. I have switched channels and modes, and still the problem exists. There are a lot of wireless routers in my building and haven't had this problem before. My guesses are its either the firmware or interference, but I'm not totally sold on the the interference theory. I'm getting really frustrated being online and having to wait for my wireless signal to come back online. oh, and my signal % is hovering around 50-70% and I'm a few feet away. I'm running Mixed mode, 2.4Ghz, and my error packets are stacking up at a steady rate. I just want to be able to get back to where I was a few weeks ago. Any help is appreciated.  :)

Was there a reason why you upgraded the FW.
What HW version is this router?
What ISP service do you have? Cable or DSL?
Does the ISP modem have a built in router?
What devices are you connecting to it?
What is the highest WiFi mode your devices support and use? G or N?
There anything in the log file about this during this time frame?

Interference can be the cause as you said there are other WiFi routers in the area and people gradually adding WiFi routers and moving in with them near you certainly can cause interference.

I would do this first, do a factory reset of the router and do not upload the previous saved config file. I've coticed that some users are experiencing some complications by uploading corrupt saved configuration files after factory resets and FW updates. You need to start clean. Test with out changing anything accept if you need to get the router to connect to a DSL modem thats bridged. Other than this, test with factory reset. I would also change the WiFi mode to Single mode G at 2.4Ghz or Mixed G and N if you need N. No reason to broadcast A and B if your not using them. If you don't see the disconnection, then save off the new config to file.

Let us know how it goes.

Yea, I would say its more likly interference. Also, try to disable auto scan and experiment with different channels.

I upgraded for I wanted to stay current, for I originally had 1.02 as of 2 weeks ago, but after reading the post about “ If it’s running fine, don’t bother to upgrade” I was starting to regret staying up to date with the router.
The HW version is A1

My ISP is TKS, its German for I’m stationed here and its cable.

Yes, it’s a Motorola SBV5121E

The only devices connected to are 2 laptops and an itouch. They all support N.

My log file has a lot of blocked incoming traffic for some reason. For awhile I was thinking it was the incoming traffic, but since I did like you suggested, things have been good. I talked to my wife and she was saying it could be on the ISP end, but is unsure.

I did like you suggested with the factory reset, and things looked good for awhile. I forgot to turn off my wireless on my PC, and the router configured for me, and gave me the best settings for windows, problem was now I didn’t have a hard line connection. A reset fixed this and was back on track.  My signal strength was hovering around 90% but going up and down, so could have been interference like you said. I messed with the settings a bit, and reset to factory a couple of times. It would go well for a bit, but would get disconnected so I finally switched to “N” mode only and disabled auto scan. The channel I’m on currently is the factory default channel, and never really messed with it. Things are holding steady with what you suggested, and like you said, it did sound like interference. If anything changes I’ll keep you posted. Thank you for your time and help in this matter.  :)

I have the same problem with my 4500 as well.  This has been going on for sometime and I notice it more when my computers are backing up or share files.  Neither would involve my Motorola cable modem.  I have only had my 4500 for about six months.  I have reset it to factory and went through the settings again.  Works great for a while then I go through phases where the router needs to be unplugged and plugged back in.

What FW is currently loaded?
How are you connecting to the router? Wired or Wireless?

Have you set up static reserved IP addresses on the router for all of your devices?

I am running 1.21NA for FW and I all of my device are wireless. No, I don't believe I setup any static address on my router. Not sure how I guess never had to do that.

I have gone through the DHCP Reservation area and setup each computer there, showing each computer with a IP address. Assume this is the something and has been done since I setup the router.

V1.21 is known for having issue with hanging and random boots. I would do this..do a factory reset, updated to v1.23, factory reset again, then see how it goes. I would set wireless for single mode G or mixed mode g and n. Let us know how it goes.

Ok I got the FW updated today and have it set up now. Hoping this will take care of the problem. I'll give it a few days will let you know. I'll to do some network backups which should be a big load through the router.

Thank you FurryNutz for your help. Cool screen name by the way!
