Wireless Connectivity Dropping
« on: March 22, 2011, 11:17:53 AM »

My wireless connectivity with my 4500 keeps dropping. It does it quite often (several times a day), and is a real pain. With this said, I am connecting through ATT (netopia motorola modem), which I recently configured to work with this wireless router (I set up the bridged ethernet connection on the modem and entered all the pppoe information.)

Setting all this up correctly helped increase the overall connection (before the D-link kept dropping internet wired/wirelessly) Now it just drops wireless information often.

Something that should be known is that I recently purchased a Synology server, which is connected directly to the D-link router. The Synology acts as a NAS, sharing files and downloading torrents online, which often stresses the network a bit.

I would like to also add that I have the router set up on a cooling fan, to help keep it from getting too hot.

Any tips or advice would be highly appreciated as I am at my wits end. Thank you in advance!

-I forgot to mention. When I say it is dropping wireless signal, it won't even allow you to connect to it at ALL wirelessly. Vista is saying that the router isn't responding (almost like I'm out of range.) This not being the case because I am, RIGHT next to it.

What FW version is currently loaded?
What WiFi modes are you using?
Does it drop connections on wired as well?

No, it only drops connection through wireless, wired remains fine.
firmware version: 1.23NA,  2010/04/15
I'm using mixed wireless modes 802.11n etc on channel 6 channel width 20mhz trans rate is checked "the best"

2.4 band is checked.

Let me know if you need anymore info, thanks!

I would try single mode G or N to test or Mixed G and N. No need to broadcast A or B if your not using them. I would set Width to Auto and see how it goes.

Any other WiFi in the area?
Any house cordless phones?

Ok, switched the settings over as recommended.

I also check for another wireless network, and there seems to be another wireless network broadcasting a fairly good distance away. It looks like one of those comcast/suddenlink routers/modems, also broadcasting at 802.11n.

There are cordless phones in the house, but I highly doubt they are the problem, because they have been here way before this problem started.

What frequency do the phones operate on?

Are the router logs saying anything during the time frame when the wireless goes down?

I don't see anything crazy standing out at me on the router logs, but I rebooted the router as normal, and will wait for it to go down again, at which time I will copy the logs and post them here.

As for the phones, I'll check the freqs but I doubt it's causing a problem.

Is there any tips for reducing the chance of wireless drops (like disabling features such as gamefuel?)

Can try disableing Gamefuel, WISH, Protected WiFi, Short GI. Are you using Advanced DNS Services? I recommend disabling it if you do. Make sure Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses are being filled in under Basic/Internet/Manual then ensure DNS Relay is enabled.

[WARN]   Tue Mar 22 13:11:13 2011   Wireless schedule init? Do you have anything scheduled?

I notice that you have alot of these entries:  Blocked outgoing TCP packet from 192.168.0.193:6881
This PC or device on your system?

I would do this, Do a factory reset using Tools/System. You can save your current config if you want to. Then turn OFF ALL devices accept for one wireless PC or LT that you can connect with to the router. Ensure all other devices are completely OFF.

I would also setup a static reserved IP address for this device as well on the router. Make sure the device is set to obtain an IP address automatically.

Test with just one device and see if you get a reboot.

What devices do you have connecting wirelessly?

192.168.0.193 Is the Synology server I have connected directly to the router. I have no clue why its blocking packets from it or to it.

Also after you test the one device, try setting the SPI firewall settings to TCP/UDP to Endpoint Independent for both.

Okay,

So I went ahead and disabled all the extras (WISH, Gamefuel etc) I also went ahead and set my firewall as you described.  If it goes down again I'm going to copy the logs (I think last time it rebooted due to a system change I had made earlier) and I'll post them here, as well as reseting the system.

Also, could dropping the connection be because of the Synology server, or because of me reconfiguring the PPPOE settings?

could be either...if your making changes to the router, it needs to reboot on most of the changes. Theres only a few items that it doesn't require a reboot.

Reason for taking down all of the devices accept one is to try and see if the issue remains with just one device connected. Then if you don't see the wireless go down, then bring up the next device and test. Keep doing this until you notice the wireless go down. Possible that something connected is the root cause that is making the router or wireless mis-behave.  :-\

So far so good.

I'm considering two possibilities. The other day my DSL modem went down and I had to contact ATT support, which informed me that I had it configured wrong to the router. They told me the INCORRECT way to configure it, and directly after I got off the phone with them, it dropped both Wired and wireless internet.

I ended up doing some heavy duty research into it, and got my modem/router configured perfectly together. In the mean time I did change some settings (example would be turning on gamefuel), mainly playing with the functionality of the router.

In this time, I also set up my Synology server for web hosting (taking the IP address of the synology and converting it into a web url) so that I could pass the website url off to friends who needed data remotely off my synology.

So, the problem must be either with the settings I played with earlier, or the Synology. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's not my web server, because the configurations for it are a lot harder to redo.
