Help with new internet setup
« on: March 30, 2011, 04:07:49 PM »

Hi all.  I recently had to change from Charter to CenturyLink Dsl service because oddly enough, where I live Charter isn't faster than Dsl.  When they came and set up the new modem to my router, the tech reset my router to default, so I'm basically starting all over.  I have followed Furry's guides to setting up our PS3s and Xboxes but am now having a problem with uTorrent.  It constantly says my ports aren't open. I've tried port forwarding with multiple sets of instructions and guides.  I have tried quite a few "automatic port forwarding" programs to no avail.  Can anyone talk me through what I need to do with this router to setup optimal performance?  I haven't done anything except add the game rules for our game systems. Everything else is at factory defaults.  Thanks in advance :)

Just in case you need to know, we have 2 Xboxes hard wired, 1 PS3 hard wired, 2 Desktops hard wired, 3 Xboxes wireless, 1 PS3 wireless, 2 Wii's wireless, and 1 laptop wireless.

Hello Mjp1531

May I ask what is the firmware currently loaded on your DGL 4500? Just login into your router via 192.168.0.1 and it should be stated in general.

Wow lol ok thanks guys.  I don't know how to find that out but I guess I will be calling Century Link in the morning and seeing what I can do.  I'll get back to you when I'm done.

I will :)  So is there anything I need to do with the router settings since I'm on DSL now?  I think I saw somewhere in one of the settings that it still thinks I'm connected to Cable.

Well thats a decently complex question, it depends on how your modem is configures, how your ISP handles things, and a few other things. Its probably PPPoE or some other simular type, which is a fancy way of saying you need a password to get online, while with cable you don't. You can decide (sometimes) which device handles that authentication process. Sometimes its the modem, sometimes the router, or sometimes you can even install software on your computer that does it (not possible in this case ofcourse).

Start by calling Century link and ask

1. Whats the model number of your modem.
2. Is there any username or password you need to access it.
3. Is it possible to put it in bridge mode (also known as transparent).
4. Do they have a list of closed ports?

I tried looking on their support site but yea...I couldn't find anything there even talking about High speed internet or DSL. Just dialup. Hopefully their phone support is better. ::crosses fingers::

If you get this info for the DSL, go into the routers web page under Basic/Internet/Manual. Theres a Connection drop down box, Look for PPPoE there.

Yea,  the thing is some ISP only allow the device registered in the system to do the handshake. Not many though.
