DIR-655 reboots frequently
« on: January 18, 2009, 07:06:35 AM »

Dear,

got the following problems with my DIR-655:
#1 reboots with cable and wireless clients disconnected
#2 wireless not stable and frequent clients get disconnected

I have the following devices connected:
 1 desktop pc - linux
 1 ps3
 1 linux server
 1 nas
 1 eee-pc
 1-2 wireless laptops

not all of them are connected in the same time
Desktop and NAS are on most of the time
ps3 in the w/e and evening via wireless causing problem #2

all was working perfectly with my DI-624
I decided to get me a DIR-655 for the GB-eth interfaces that I need for NAS and desktop.

Got my DIR-655 in Shanghai via 360buy.com and upgraded to the lasted fw
Firmware Version: 1.21
Hardware Version: A4

In case I start a BT, the routers reboots w/o a pattern 3-10 time an hour
tried different configurations with and w/o QOS enabled, port fwd, wireless enabled and not...
heat is not an issue, in the room is pretty cool, 20-25 dgr (NAS HDD's report 39-40 dgr)

with DI-624 as main router and DIR-655 as extension switch (as per manual description) BT and all connections are working very well w/o reboots of any kind.

currently I have DIR-655 working w/o wireless and DWL-2000AP+A as wireless device and working well for about an hour already

I can provide:
 - remote connection to the router
 - config for lab tests
 - logs

please help me in getting this fixed to use DIR-655 at his full power.

Thanks

Edit:
 PS: http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/downloadsdetail.asp
reports no results found for DIR-655 (Ver.A4)

If your current setup helps, then the Auto Channel Scan on the DIR-655 might be causing some of your wireless restarts.

Thanks for the reply.
I will try fixing a channel for radio reply with the status.

one more thing to add is that using DIR-655 w/o internet connection
did 150 GB transfer from desktop to NAS and did not had a problem, not reboot/restart of router.

I see there is some instability with this router when it comes to wireless and lots of incoming WAN requests to be routed.

Another thing is that the logs are lost after the restart, and this gives no clue of what happened in the last moments before the reboot.
Is there a possibility to capture them continuous?

Regards

Probably not (the last thing you want to do to a crashing router is ask it to allocate memory or write to nvram).  What you can do, however, is set up a syslog daemon (Tools - Syslog) and attempt to capture the activity that way.

Syslog is very popular on Linux but a program called Kiwi Syslog Daemon is Windows.

again, never had the ps3 disconnected from media server with DI-624 (4 year old router)

The number of errors can be caused by a forced lock on a transmission speed that is actually too high for the signal quality. The number of errors does not have a real impact, errored packets are resend.

Interesting error numbers -- I would have expected that to result in higher than 109 errors.

Either way, ignore that display for now. Wireless errors are normal.  This sounds like a WAN issue.

Describe your end goal -- do you want to retire the DI-624 and the DWL2100AP?  Do you intend to use them?

I do streaming from nas to ps3.
mostly then I see lots of Wireless errors
109 is the number of errors w/o activity on wireless or very small one.

Yes, I want to replace DI-624.
DWL21000AP I use very seldom.
both DI-624 and DWL I keep them as backup.
I need a working router to surf the web, ftp, server web pages, GB eth for nas ... normal home lan infrastructure. The router must be reliable with WAN interface connected and stable (which was the case of DI-624)

what is interesting is that I have downgraded DI-655 to 1.20, then upgrade to 1.21.
from router page the firmware upgrade took me to tw firmware download site from where I got a B06 package in 1.21 release (maybe a beta)
this b06 .bin file has the same size as us firmware package but diff cksum.

Thanks

It has been posted , on the D-Link forums elsewhere, that the WAN port "auto" speed negotiation can cause problems.  You can test by setting the WAN port to a "dedicated" port speed.

Okay, from 1.21 B06 ... from factory defaults

In the DIR-655 configuration pages,

1. go to Status - Device Info and copy down your DNS Servers.
2. go to Setup - Internet - Manual Internet Connection Setup and input those DNS servers under Primary and Secondary DNS servers, then click Save Settings, but continue without rebooting;
3. go to Setup - Wireless - Manual Wireless button - and disable Auto Channel Scan, and set your wireless parameters the way you'd like them, choose a new SSID, then click Save Settings, but continue without rebooting (since you're changing wireless parameters, the thing might reboot or restart anyway -- this firmware is very clumsy);
4. go to Setup - Network Settings and UN-check Enable DNS Relay, then click Save Settings and reboot. After that reboot -- remove power from the DIR-655 for a few moments, then plug it back in.
5. In your wireless clients, erase all previously saved wireless profiles and reboot them.  When they come back up, reassociate with your "new" AP.

Let me know how it goes.

w/o dns relay internet is not working...
had to manually change resov.conf file on mu linux box

lets see how long will the connection last and no reboots
only eeepc is connected to the router via radio:

Wireless Radio :  Enabled
802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b
Channel Width : 20MHz
Channel : 3 (fixed)
Secondary Channel :
WISH : Active
Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Configured
Guest Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Not Configured

on eeepc I run firefox, IM and skype
router up for 20 mins

will return with more info

does not look bad

I checked:
logs 1999 records
statistics - ok
the router was up for more then an hour

checked again the logs and router did a reboot

so must be that cannot handle even logs review load
I can't see it handling well connections

the logs, ok I may not need them, I can syslog them
can someone tell the real thing behind log options:
are the options just for view or also internal logging?

Thanks for info and extra suggestions

indeed, when connected back in the place or the main router with the NAS and one mode desktop
every 3-5 minutes dir-655 reboots
is there other firmware I can use?

what is the diff from A1..3 and A4?
can someone from D-Link provide an answer?

Guys,

1. Re-flash (to final) firmware 1.21
2. Set WAN connection to manual - 100 mbit
3. When unchecking DNS relay, manually enter DNS servers manually (other screen), this might take a reboot to take affect.

Let's see what happens

A1/2 are the same
A3 has realtek switch instead of Vitesse.
A/4 has same reaktek switch and a newer wifi radio.
