Getting devices to see files on media server
« on: April 05, 2011, 03:14:42 AM »

Both my TV (Panasonic with media player) and my PC (using Windows Media Player) are able to see the DNS-320 as a device, but neither of them see any files. My Samsung phone and my Xbox360 can both see the files, but are not a practical way of using the media server.

Any ideas? I've tried all sorts of variations on shares, UPNP on/off, NFS on/off, but nothing makes any difference.

PC is Windows Vista Ultimate SP2.
Windows Media Player v11
TV is Panasonic TX-L37D28BSA

I have also tried it on a Windows 7 PC which can see the files, but doesn't group by album, artist, or any other criteria for that matter, which makes it useless.

Hey Gaz,

Sounds like you need to set the network shares in order to see the files, or are you talking about streaming? if that is the case make sure upnp is enabled on the NAS and then make folders available that you want to see through the various devices (assuming they support upnp...) Dont think you need to worry about NFS.

Have you enabled upnp on your router? is it even an option?

The reason you can see files under windows 7 is because you have LLTD turned on under LAN setup, thats cool leave that enabled.

are you on firmware v2? if not upgrade chap!

Pabs, I've set network shares, enabled UPnP and basically switched everything on and off in every combination I can think of! Updated to V2 of firmware yesterday before coming to the forum in the hope that it would all just work!

All you need to do on the D-Link NAS side is to enable the UPNP-AV server and then select the folder you want to share. You can refresh just in case. If you do not see your media on a particular device, it may not be compatible. Ensure the device you wish to use supports at least UPNP-AV. If it is DLNA certified it will ensure best compatibility between vendors.

Some media players will also support media streaming via other protocols such as SMB/Samba. The Boxee and WD Live do this. I find those the best cause you do not even need to worry about UPNP-AV, DLNA and refreshing. If you can see your files on your Windows network, it will find it and it will work.

I had to enable UPnP, add a folder and wait for it to build the media library.

I then had to go into System Management,System Settings, Defaults and restore the device (This will NOT loose data!).

I then enabled UPnP again, added my folder/s and waited for the media library to build and every worked!

Don't ask me how or why it fixes the issue but it did.
