Connecting but cannot get on Internet
« on: April 05, 2011, 08:03:58 AM »

I upgraded the firmware everything was fine. This may not be realted to the firmware. I can now connect to the Router but cannot get any Internet or data to transmit wireless. Plug in directly it works fine.

Any help would be wonderful.

What is your ISP service? DSL or cable?
What is the ISP Modem? Stand alone or built in router with modem?

How are you connecting to the router? Wired or wireless?
If wireless, what WiFi mode are you using? Mixed? Try single mode G with out any security to test?

Ensure that Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses are filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual
Ensure DNS relay is enabled under Setup/Network settings.
Disable Advanced DNS.
Change Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Disable Extra Wireless Protection under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Let us know.

Linksys BEFS241 Etherfast Cable/DSL router
to
DIR-655

I was trying to get it setup to have the Linksys router give out the IP Address
becasue the way its set I get the same IP if I connect to Etherfast directly the
wireless and Wired router give out the same base addresses.

Any suggestions? Thnaks

I would remove the linksys from the line and connect the 655 router direct to the cable modem.

I'm a little late to this party, but I have the same problem, wired in both dell and hp laptops and they are fast and steady online..  Unplug and try to connect wireless with BOTH, can't connect to network? It's open (no encryption) and router install was successful.

I will try to understand and follow your advice at lunch and see if it works for me too, but..

Out of your five suggestions I only understand these;

Disable Advanced DNS.
Change Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Disable Extra Wireless Protection under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

The first two went way over my head!? I hope the three that I understand will fix it, I'll know in about an hour! Thanks..

You don't happen to have a PS3 do you?? I can't log-in to the PSNetwork, I'm hoping the TCP and UDP changes will help...

In-case you need this and can help me too;
ISP - local cable company NCTV, VERY CRAPPY, 6mb/s
Stand-alone motorola modem going to DIR-655, then to DTV broadband box, Ps3 and 1 of the 2 laptops

All lights are good, no errors that I can see, just won't connect through wifi..

I'm not quite sure where to go to make those changes? Control panel/network?

On the routers web page, go to Setup/Wireless/Manual

My goodness ???

OK, I found where to go to make all of the changes, thanks..

So I changed every setting that you mentioned, and still no wifi, I'm getting bummed out!

My WINS IP address was 8.8.8.8. and 4.4.8.8. (from when I was trying to log-in to Sony Playstation Network) so I found out that WINS and LAN IP are the same, so I copied and pasted the IP address to the WINS primary and and for the secondary I just went from 1 to 2 on the very last number? Thats the only thing I did outside of what you said.

Even my LAN connection is slow, 10 seconds to load a page?

What am I missing?? I'd be happy to write down everything I have connected or related to this router or my computer, as well as all my router settings if that would help..

Um, you shouldn't be entering any WINS as there are no WINS servers around. You need to setup at static IP address under Setup/Networking for all of your devices on the routers web page. Then make sure that each devices network settings are setup to Automatically Obtain an IP address and DNS addresses under there network settings. No WINS addresses are use here.

Ensure that Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses are being filled in on the router under setup/internet/manual.
Use the ISP DNS addresses found under Status/Device Info/Wan section.

I would disable Advanced DNS Service if you have this option.
Enable DNS relay.

Still nothing.. Thanks for helping me out today man, I think I'm getting closer.. With DHCP enabled, IP addresses were assigned to all devices, also; "Always broadcast" "NetBIOS announcement"and "Learn NetBIOS from WAN" are enabled, don't know if that matters?

Here's a list of everything you've helped with so far;

Ensure that Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses are filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual
DONE
Ensure DNS relay is enabled under Setup/Network settings.
DONE
Disable Advanced DNS.
DONE
Change Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
DONE
Disable Extra Wireless Protection under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
DONE
Try changing WiFi mode from Mixed to Single mode G with out any security to test
DONE, SHOULD I KEEP IT THIS WAY?
then turn on WPA and auto cipher and test. Let us know.
CAN'T FIND THAT ONE?

You need to setup at static IP address under Setup/Networking for all of your devices on the routers web page.
DONE

After I make my next changes, should I shut off everything and power up in order(modem, router, laptop) before i try to connect again?

Using the WiFi with out security is just temp to see if you can get your device to connect. Once you get it to connect the go back in and set up Security under Setup/Wireless/Manual. Cipher settings are in the same place. Theres a drop down menu for WPA and cipher type to use.

I presume you are getting Internet on wired on the same devices?

Yes it would be good to power off all then ON in sequence.

OK, sweet! I don't plan on setting up wifi security if I don't have to, I'm way out in the middle of nowhere..

All right, I'm gonna triple check all my router settings and reboot everything. I hope this works, let ya know in a minute...

My LAN connection is way faster than before, but still no wifi, on this machine or the other, or my phone either..

I don't know man, This is incredible.. I've never had this much trouble on any wireless network issue before. I checked and re-checked and did everything, I'm dumbfounded... I put my 802.11 setting back to mixed mode g,n, etc. before i rebooted everything.

The router and all the devices are the same as they were when everything worked fine a few days ago, the problems started after the firmware update after I made some changes to try and get my PS3 on-line. I don't know what I did for it to get like this?...

I don't know what to do except buy a different router and hope for the best?
