cannot connect to network
« on: April 08, 2011, 10:45:35 AM »

I got my protected stuff set up but every time i try to connect my laptop wirelessly i get errors. I select the wireless network and it says i need a pin.

I goto advanced on the router setup ans wifi protected setup and use the pin there and I get the following error

"Windows cannot get the network settings from the router"

I am using windows 7. theres a button below the error says connect using security key instead but i havent got a clue as to what that is. could someone pls help me as I need to get this working ASAP as I am due to leave town for several weeks of work and the wife needs to be able to connect wirelessly.

thanks
Joe

Need to turn off Proctected WiFi on the router as it's not needed for PCs, mainly for wireless devices like printers and such. Setup security and a password under Setup/Wireless settings/manual. Set up a WPA or WPA2 security mode. Down under Cipher type should be a selection for Auto TPIK or AES. Under that you should see a box that you can enter in a password that you want to use, can be anything, make it something you remember. Once it's set up and saved in the router. Go to your wireless device and connect to the wireless SSID you made. It should ask you for a password, enter this in. It should connect.

I see, LOL ya, when you get these routers, people forget or don't put a password on the routers Admin log in and the WiFi. Got to lock them down man. LOL. Hope it works well. Cheers.  ;)

I agree with the password on the Wifi, but not on the password on the admin. Unless your worried about your kids or someone with local access changing settings on you. Not to say Furry is wrong, its smart and does add a extra layer of protection, but if you forget that password, your screwed. Have to start over from scratch.

naw the password wont be forgotten. but when i didnt have it protected before a neighbor was downloading pirated movies and got caught and it showed as my ip address so was a warning by my isp so i needed to make sure it was protected this time or i would lose my service and since wife works for the cable co would look real bad on her too

Good job securing it then. Don't worry though, that kind of thing happens all the time. Most ISP's only care because they have the MPA or someone breathing down their neck. I do wonder how IPv6 will effect things though. Since each IP will be able to be tracked to a certain device, it will certainly make those kind of situations interesting. SSL Newgroups will win the day no doabt. Heh

Glad to help out and you got it fixed. Ya, have to be careful with who you let on your network and such. Ya you don't seen the Admin PW sometimes, however if you have alot of people on the network and not around to manage it, I recommend a Admin PW Harry, you never know what might happen.  ::)
