While reading Google's research article "Failure Trends in a Large Disk Drive Population" it looks as if the optimal temperature range for a hard drive is 30-35 deg C (figure 5, 3 and 4 year mark). This range is nowhere near the range that the thermostat on the DNS-323 kicks in to cool the hard drive. I've personally never had my fan turn on automatically, but from what I've read is that it turns on at 43 deg C. Ideally from what I've read in Google's research article, I'd like to see the low setting on the fan kick in at 35 deg C and high setting somewhere around 40-42 deg C. If anyone has any input on how to change the thermostat setting I'd greatly appreciate it.

Leaving mine on low results in a temperature range of 30-39 depending on how hard I access it. This range has been constant for a year or more as I log the temperature every hour.

I think you will first need to install ffp.  Somewhere in my readings I saw a long discussion and examples of scripts that can be run using ffp to read temperatures, change fan speeds at specific temperatures and other goodies.  I can not find it now, but I think it all started with a search at http://forum.dsmg600.info/search.php

Hello all,

I've install ffp on my dns 323 but the problem with the fan is already present :

I can't fix it as I would like to do.

I want the fan stops when temperature is low but when the disks stop, the fan starts, whatever the temperature.

I read in another topic that firmware 1.10 will fix this bug. But this topic is one year's old. Have you news about this ?

Can someone explain to lunix newbie how to do this and also will this work on a C1 model?  I have funplug already installed and this script, if I can work out how to set it up would be ideal.

I did try but failed.  I too wanted to know if its possible to get the fans spinning any earlier than 43 deg, or can you trick the themostat hardware into thinking its warmer then it is so it kick in earlier, anyone help please?

I did it using a fun_plug script and it works great.  Lets me control exactly what temp triggers off, low, high fan settings.

Do you have a C1 model, I tired it but not working for me on a C1.

There is a script for C1 hardware.

You also might monitor the temperature level as dosborne does so you have a better understanding of the "problem".
