help on FTP set up with DNS-323 behind Linksys WRT54G
« on: April 11, 2011, 11:07:14 PM »

ok so just a heads up - i have no clue when it comes to networking. the closest i've got to anything working is my FTP, however i can only access it locally. can somebody PLEASE help me? a step by step guide (or instructions) would suffice.

as mentioned, i've set it up so that there is local access. i have also set up port forward 21 on my router to the IP address of my DNS-323.

on the admin page of my DNS-323, it says that a static IP address is recommended if i want to be using the FTP server. i have no clue what this means or how to set one up.

please help! i tried looking at other topics regarding this, but it's just all so confusing. ??? ??? ???

As you probably know the ip address is what is used to "contact" your DNS-323, every device on your network must have one, and no two devices can have the same ip address.  In the old days, all ip addresses were set by the user at the device, and the user had to keep a list of what devices had which addresses - to make life easy, automatically assigned addresses were developed, using a process known as DHCP or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, and today many networks use DHCP.

Your network most likely has a DHCP server built into the router, now the trouble with DHCP is that the server controls the addresses and they can change without your knowing it.  The older, user configured addresses do not change like this, and are known as static ip addresses to differentiate from dynamic addresses.

To prevent a situation where the ip address of your ftp server changes unknown to you, you can set a static address - I'm assuming that you can login to the DNS-323's admin page - select setup and click LAN - you'll see a radio button for DHCP client & static ip, and below that the spaces to enter an ip address, subnet mask, gateway and two DNS servers.

Setting a static address is as easy as clicking the static ip radio button, entering the number and then click save settings (at the top of the page) - knowing what numbers to use is a little more complex - if you're configured for DHCP, there will be numbers there already, make a note of them and tell me what they are, and I'll help you figure it out.

Extremely unlikely - at least not if you're using dynamic addressing.

Your DHCP server would not set the default gateway so that is points back to the ip address of the device, and based on experience I'd say those details were taken from your router, not from the DNS-323.

What sort of router are you using?

I could suggest an address based on that, but ideally you want to use a static address that is outside of the DHCP server's "lease pool", or the range of addresses the server will offer, so that you avoid what is known as an ip address conflict - when two devices have the same address.

Hi, the ip address of 192.168.1.1 is the default ip address of the wrt45g. congigure your nas to a ip address of say 192.168.1.150, which is in the range of addresses of the linksys. Use all other settings except ip as you had listed

IF the router is a Linksys, it would be better to use a static address between 192.168.1.2 & 192.168.1.99 since most Linksys, by default do not issue dynamic addresses in that range.

Always avoid setting a static address within the router's DHCP lease pool.
