DIR-825 Access Control Not Working
« on: April 14, 2011, 09:47:53 AM »

Objective: Only want the kids using the wireless during the day.

First confirmed the router time.
Established a schedule called : Available hours of Use
Time Start 7:00AM End 11:00PM
Saved the schedule.
Went to Access Control. >Add Policy
Named Policy> Available Hours
Selected the schedule I created from the drop down list (Available hours of Use).
Selected Mac> Added each of the laptops in the house that are on the list.>next
Selected Block All Access> No checks marks in web filter or port filter.
Next>save

As soon as I select save, none of the laptops can connect to the internet. I want them to be able to connect during this scheduled time. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks PSC

Is there a Deny or Allow drop down box in Access Control? I thought there was this option that you have to specifiy to allow or deny.

What happens if you select block some access?

I'm just trying to figure out if the Time is configured correctly or your making the wrong selection to block.

By the time you have your blocking access from 7am to 11pm. Which in real time now, the devices will not get any access and the rule is working at this point. Now if you stated that you want the kids to use the wireless and have access during the day. Is this the same time frame you stated? 7am-11pm? If you want to block access, at night and early morning hours, then lets try changin the start time to BLOCK to 11pm and to 7am?

I thought I may have had the hours reversed so I went to change start time to 11:00PM and end at 7AM, but it would not let me put in 7AM the next day. For testing purpose only I entered start at 11:00PM and end at 11:59 PM. At 11:30 PM the kids started laughing at me because they were on the laptops and the policy did not work.  This is why I changed it back to start at 7AM and end at 11PM. They think it is funny that I cannot figure out this wireless router but my day is comming.

Ah ya, the old cat and mouse game with the kids, funny. LOL.
I wish I could help out more. I don't just this feature very much. Mostly adults in my house. LOL.
I think I'll try this out when I get home. Shouldn't be that hard, I think you just need to make sure the time is right and select the right option.

ALSO, have you set up static IP addresses for your devices on the router? This should be first first off before setting up rules. If you set up rules, then the IP addresses can change or be changed and this will break the rule. Not sure if this will help in this case however lets start at the beginning and make sure the rules aren't broken.

Ok so looking at my router and setting up the Access Control like you did, this option is blocking and thus will shut off access to the internet from the specified hours you stated. So from 7am to 11pm, there access is off, so if you want them to have access from 7am to 11pm, you should be able to put in 11pm in Start and 7am in End. Select Block all. And you should be good. I have set up the same on my DGL-4500 and it should work for you on the 825.

Did anyone ever figure this out?

I've got the same exact setup and if I block access for one machine (using either the IP or MAC method), all of the machines will be blocked from the internet.

What current FW is loaded?
What hardware version is this router?

All devices on wired or wireless or both being blocked?
I would start fresh with a factory reset.
Have you set up static IP addresses for all of your devices on the router? Ensure auto obtain an IP address is set up on the devices. This will ensure each device has it's own IP address that never changes.

I then setup a time Tools/Schedules first. I did the 7am to 11pm selecting all week.
I then set up the Advanced/Access control to ALLOW for the scheduled time period for the one device.
Select the schedule. Apply.

IT should only effect the one device you specified, not all.

The router is the DIR-825 Rev B with firmware 2.05NA

I'll give the factory reset a try and I'm not sure about the wired/wireless being blocked.  Right now I can confirm all wireless is blocked.  When I get home, I'll try a wired connection.

I do have static IPs for all of the devices on the router.  I've verified that the devices are all getting the proper IP address and they aren't changing.
I set up the schedule for 11pm to 7am all week, but I set it up to BLOCK ALL ACCESS on one device.  I've tried specifying the device by the MAC or the IP, but it always results in blocking all internet access for all devices regardless of the time.  (It seems to ignore both the device specified and the schedule). I don't have an option for ALLOW, just LOG WEB ACCESS, BLOCK ALL ACCESS or BLOCK SOME ACCESS.

It seems pretty straightforward, the website filtering options work, just not having any luck with blocking access.  Thanks.

Ok, sounds like it's set up good. Odd that it's blocking access for ALL devices and not just the one specified. It shouldn't do that. Keep us posted.

Resetting the router did not affect it.  If I chose BLOCK ALL ACCESS for one single device it still blocks access to the internet through the router for all devices.  I've now tried both wired and wireless devices, changed the IP addressing, still get the same effect.

I've even tried the BLOCK SOME ACCESS option, then applied PORT FILTERS.  I chose to filter all IPs from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255 on just one device.  I get the same result, the internet is not accessible from any device through the router.  The second that I uncheck the Policy Enable button, the internet instantly is accessible again.  The only thing that is working is the WEB FILTER, it works flawlessly for any device or devices that I choose.

Just curious here, what ISP service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What does your network topology look like> modem---> router--->all devices?
What kind of devices do you have connected to the router?
How long have you had this router?

I think I've figured this out.

Under the access control section, for the first policy, I had been setting 8 IP addresses to use under a Web Filtering Rule.  I had then used 1 IP address which I wanted to have scheduled Blocked Access.  8 is the max number of IP addresses you can use for a single rule, the firmware gives you a notice when you've reached your max # of IPs for that policy.  If I change the first Web Filtering Policy to use less than 8 IP addresses, suddenly the Blocked Access policy works correctly, just blocking that single device.

I have it set up now as the first policy to use Web Filtering on 6 different IP addresses.  Under the second policy, I have blocked access from 1030pm to 630am for the 4 IP addresses and everything appears to be working properly.
