Worse download speed than old router
« on: April 16, 2011, 02:02:07 PM »

Hello, I believe I am having issues with my new DIR 655 router. From when I first hooked it up and ran thru the setup wizard it has been slow to download web pages and basically anything. For example, when running padora(a music service) when the next song downloaded with the old router it would download at a speed at approx. 1200KB/s. I have a program that monitors my upload and download speeds as well as CPU usage and disk usage. Anyway, with the DIR 655 it only downloads at approx. 235KB/s. I also went to speedtest.net and it  records my download at only 1.62MBPS. With my old router I was getting 5+MBPS. Can somebody please tell me what I am doing wrong or settings I need to change? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

What is your ISP Service? DSL and Cable?
What is your ISP Modem? Stand alone or built in router?
How are you connecting to the router? Wired or Wireless?

I recommend setting static IP addresses on the router for all connected devices.
Turn off QoS and traffic shaping.
Try changing firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Let us know how it goes.

Thank you FurryNutz for your reply. I apologize for not including this information initially. My ISP Service is Comcast Cable. The name on the side of the modem is Arris, I have phone service thru Comcast also. Stand alone DIR 655 router. And I am connecting thru the wire. Although I tried connecting wirelessly with my laptop and experienced the same symptoms. I turned off Qos and traffic shaping. And I changed the TCP and UDP firewall settings to Endpoint Independent. Although, I could not find the correct window in the router configuration for the setting of static IP addresses for all connected devices. But even without changing that I have seen a big improvement. At speedtest.net my download speed has gone from 1.62MBPS to 6.05MBPS since the changes. So thank you for your help, it is much appreciated.  :)

This Arris cable modem have a built in router by chance? Seen them with and with out. You have house phone service thru your cable provider? Having 2 routers on the same line can cause some issues. I don't think you can bridge these kinds of modems. However you could check and see if you can put the 655 routers IP address into the Arris modems DMZ.

Setting up Static IP addresses on the router will be under Setup/Network settings.

No, this Arris cable modem doesn't have a router built in. I asked the technicial who installed it, and it has no additional ports other than Ethernet out. House phone service thru the cable provider is common where I'm at. Please forgive me, I am technically able, but new to router setup. The setting up of static IP addresses, is that the Add DHCP Reservation? If that isn't it, I don't see it. Thanks again for your posts and your help.

In the router, go to Setup/Network settings.

This is the page I get when I go to Setup/Network settings. There is nothing there about static IP addresses, just the DHCP settings. Is it possible they changed where it is? Thanks for working with me on this.

Router Settings
Use this section to configure the internal network settings of your router. The IP Address that is configured here is the IP Address that you use to access the Web-based management interface. If you change the IP Address here, you may need to adjust your PC's network settings to access the network again.

Router IP Address :
Subnet Mask :
Device Name :
Local Domain Name :
Enable DNS Relay :

DHCP Server Settings
Use this section to configure the built-in DHCP Server to assign IP addresses to the computers on your network.

Enable DHCP Server :
DHCP IP Address Range :     to
DHCP Lease Time :     (minutes)
Always broadcast :     (compatibility for some DHCP Clients)
NetBIOS announcement :
Learn NetBIOS from WAN :
NetBIOS Scope :    (optional)
NetBIOS node type :    Broadcast only (use when no WINS servers configured)
 Point-to-Point (no broadcast)
 Mixed-mode (Broadcast then Point-to-Point)
 Hybrid (Point-to-Point then Broadcast)
Primary WINS IP Address :
Secondary WINS IP Address :

Add DHCP Reservation
Enable :
Computer Name :    <<  Computer Name
IP Address :
MAC Address :

DHCP Reservations List :
Enable Host Name MAC Address IP Address

Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients : 1

I have the Arris too, its just a regular cable modem that also handles the telephone connection.  Using the DHCP reservation makes sure that the systems connected to the router get the same IP everytime.  Kind of like setting static addresses without having to go to each system and manually entering the numbers.

I think I know exactly what your problem is. I had the same "slow download" issue. Apparently the DIR-655 router has a problem when the settings on the computer for "Speed and Duplex" are set to "Auto Negotiations" (the router automatically sets the computer to 10 Mbps Full Duplex, not sure why....) and it has a problem with the "100 Mbps Full Duplex" setting on the computer as well (Download speed caps at 1.60 Mbps with this setting). My network card for my computer (Intel® 82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection) only supports up to "100 Mbps Full Duplex". If you have a network card that supports only up to "100 Mbps Full Duplex" and you are still having these issues, I recommend going on your computer and changing it to "100 Mbps Half Duplex". If you have a Gigabit network card and are experiencing these issues, try setting it to "1000 Mbps Half Duplex". For some reason, when I changed it to half duplex, it fixed the download speed issue completely! It seems using the full duplex has some issues with the router and hopefully is fixed in a future firmware update.

To change the "Speed and Duplex" settings, follow the instructions below:

This was done on Windows 7, but I'm sure it's relatively the same with other versions of Windows.

1. On your computer/laptop, go to "Open Network and Sharing Center" and click on "Local Area Connection" under active networks.

2. Next, you will need to click on "Properties" and then click on "Configure" towards the upper right of the "Properties" window.

3. After clicking "Configure" a new window will pop up, click on the "Link Speed" tab and there you will be able to set your speed and duplex settings.

I hope this fixes your download speed problem like it did for me.

Omuyasha, thanks for your reply. I am running Windows XP but was able to find the setting you referenced. Unfortunately when I changed it to half duplex from full autonegotiation and clicked OK, my computer restarted. Thinking it was a one time thing, I went back and found it was still set for full autonegotiation. I changed it back to half duplex and clicked OK, any yet again my computer restarted. It seems my computer does not like that setting. But I thank your for your post and trying to help.

Trektek:
On the Network settings page, review the following section:
Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients

This will have a list of your currently connected devices and there IP address leases.
Select the Reserve word link.
This will auto fill the Add DHCP Reservation section.
You can make changes here, i.e. name and such. Once you've make any changes Select the ADD button.
This makes the Static IP address assignment to the device you selected.

Hmm.... Thats weird, I wonder why its doing that, did you make sure your not on a guest account? Make sure that your on the admin account. Well, I hope you do find a fix for it. Keep trying to change the setting, try to find a way around it, because when it does actually set it, it should fix the problem, I hope.
