Drops all paths except the active one
« on: April 23, 2011, 09:39:53 AM »

New guy here. Glad I found this forum.

I purchased the Dir-655 yesterday. My home network was all gigabit except for my router which was working fine, but I wanted the whole network within my house to be at gigabit speed.  I move a lot of big files around to my network storage device and wanted to speed that process up, which it has.

The issue I experienced twice yesterday.
After streaming a movie through the router out a hard wired port to my PC when I finished that movie I noticed that no other path through the router would work including Wi-FI, till I rebooted then they all worked again.

Last night watched a movie through the Wi-fi channel to my media PC in the basement and when the movie finished, no other port on the router worked until a reboot.
In each case the channel/path in use continued to work although other paths were not working.

It seems like a firmware/ buffer management issue.

I made a couple changes. Enabled the Multicast option and turned of QOS.

Failed again but not under the same conditions as before so I just turned off the Defragmentation option, I forget exactly how it was labeled.

Tested it a little but not a full blown hour long test.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would set up static IP addresses on the router for all of your devices.
Might try turning off auto channel scan.
Try setting WiFi from Mixed to Single mode G or N or Mixed mode G and N.
I recommend getting a 2ndary GB switch that would come off the router and then connect the main PCs to it. Only connect directly to the router for things like gaming or streaming players.

Hi PVee,

Have you enabled Wish. Just the first two Options checked and the rest not filled in.

The Wan Port Speed should be Auto, not Fixed. This has to do with the Internet not the Home Network.

In the Virtual Server, if you are running a FTP Server, have you added a Rule?

I have done most of the suggestions you guys mentioned.

I'll give it a couple days and report back with more details.

Thanks for the input.

Well, I took that one back and exchanged it Monday Am.  I think it had flakey memory or something like that.

The new one is much better.
I tried the Shareport utility and like that.
I already had a Network Storage device, but this is a plus for the router if you need that type.

I spoke too soon.   This one is failing just like the first one.

I am retired now but was a Data communications network designer for a large company for years and Manager of Data Comm for another company before that.
I made a lot of changes and the ones suggested here in various methodical sequences, and it always failed sooner or later within 1 - 5 hours.

Finally fed up today and put the Belkin N router back in and it just doesn't fail with the same gigabit switch behind it and four PC's with a lot of activity.

I am kinda convinced that this router, Rev-B, firmware 2.00 has a memory management issue or some firmware or hardware problem that causes this type of issue. I think lots of people here are describing the same problem but in different ways as experienced by them.

I noticed there is a 2.01 firmware listed on the web site. Is that safe to load?? Or, will it actually load to a Rev-B,  Dir-655??

My son has the older version with firmware  1.34NA and not having any problems.   We are both on the same segment of the Local Road runner network.

I have the two year replacement on the router so I am going to hang on to it for awhile and see if a firmware fix comes along soon.  I like the features of it and would love to be using it.

Thanks for any answers or info you cn provide.... Pete

I would do the following,
Factory reset.
Update to the latest FW for your Rev B unit.
Factory reset once more.
Set up the router. Turn off WiFi initially.
Set up static IP addressing for one PC to test with. Add devices after testing.
Ensure DNS is setup under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure DNS Relay is on.
Ensure Advanced DNS Services is OFF.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Turn off Protected WiFi

Test wired connections only. With and with out the additional switch. One PC. Then add Devices.
FYI, your sons FW is for Rev A HW i believe.

Let us know.

Hi FurryNutz,

You are confusing posters and me.

All three points you talk about above do not exist. At least, not in Firmware 1.21 for the DIR-655 A3 Router.

And I thought he was talking about a Rev B router using v2.00 FW?
Not trying to confuse posters here.
I only made reference to his sons router as being Rev A which uses v1.xx FW not v2.xx FW.

If these options are not listed on your router then my mistake.
I would double check to see if those 3 options exist.
I believe they are in v1.3x FW.

I sincerely thank you for all your help.

I tried all that and the failures still happened intermittently.

Always after streaming a movie for about an hour.  It would fail by the end of the movie or within a few minutes afterward.

I took the second router back and moved on.

Thanks again..... Pete
