New DNS-323
« on: April 23, 2011, 11:03:27 AM »

I bought a DNS-323 and have a Seagate Barracuda 2TB drive on order which I'll install in it.  I tried to update the firmware in anticipation of getting the drive but the NAS won't even power on.

I'm assuming that the NAS needs a drive before it will even power on?  Thanks.

No, you should be able to power it up without drives installed.

Does the green LED on the power supply light up? If not, make sure the power plug is all the way in. It can be a tight fit.

You hit the nail on the head!  Yup, power wasn't getting through.  It's all fixed now and I've upgraded to 1.09.

Many thanks, and I can't wait till my drive arrives to try this baby out!

If it's an AFT drive go to v1.10 before setting it up.

Sorry to hear you also brought the DNS 323. Read on Google, D-Link has one of the worst support and features for their NAS. For example, DNS 323 can't support 4K HDs while almost ALL the other NAS units can, you can no longer password protect folders and when you complain about them, the D-link's response, we don't care it is not bug, the unit is unstable under 2TB raid, and the customer support of other NAS companies seems to be much better.

If I were you I would return the unit and buy from some other manufacture while you can. If Dlink remove this post, it says so much about "we care for customers" BS I got from Dlink rep.

100% of your post is 75% based on 25% rumors and 85% speculation. See, I can throw out garbage too.

Fairly certain that not ALL other NAS units support 4k drives, especially those that have been on the market for 5 years. I urge you to go and find me 5 year old products with support. What exactly are you talking about in reference to the stability in a 2TB raid or password protecting folders? Last I checked these features worked fine as well.

All true. . . From what I've observed, most (if not all) older/legacy NAS units from other vendors that do provide some level fo 4K support have achieved this through firmware updates, many of which are still in beta.  Only newer units/models have native 4K support.

This situation is not unique to D-Link.

It is but you need to use it if you want to avoid problems and reformating the drives in the future.
Upto you but I use it fine as its much more inconvenient for me to have to wipe and reload everything again.

D-Link Multimedia, thanks for a rare posting.

Sounds like a standard political line - five years etc., looks like D-Link are setting us up for saying this 323 unit is obsolete from their perspective.

I hope you get FW1.10, promised for 2010, out of the door before you pull the plug on us all.  Good luck with time zones and daylight saving.

I have five of these 323 units, many going s l o w l y due to 2TB drives.
Going to FW1.10 beta (i dont do beta unless there is no other alternative) reformatting discs, copying back all my data, reverting to FW1.08 took me days and days and days.

And yes the QNAP210 has only been out two, not five years.  But it does support 3TB drives.

With all due respect, my DNS 323 isn't 5 years old.  I bought it new, a couple of weeks ago from an authorised retailer.  Therefore, I expect support, and certainly for more than a few months.  I understand technology changes, but certainly not so quickly after purchase.

Am I correct in presuming through your writings that the 323 is going to be reaching End of Life, or at least becoming obsolete to the point that there will no longer be any official support from DLink?

I was going to go out and buy a second DNS 323 this weekend to install at my in-laws' place, but that may now not be a smart purchasing decision.  Then again, if this product is going to be declared as EOL, should I consider returning the one I do have to the retailer for a refund, since it's still within the return policy timeframe?

Thanks in advance.

As with any product, there is always a warranty and support period regardless as to whether or not the product is replaced. The product is and still will be supported in terms of bugs/issues until the Last-Day-Of-Support for the product is announced.

The DNS-323 will reach EOL status as does any product eventually. DNS-325 is the replacement model. See above regarding support.

Both the DNS-320 and DNS-325 have greater hardware than the DNS-323. If you are looking for a media rich NAS similar to the DNS-323 then the DNS-325 is your best bet.

Will DNS-325 work with disks formatted and used on DNS-323. The ethernet port on my DNS-323 went bad after 2 1/2 years and I need to replace it. I may consider DNS-325 if I don't have to backup my data and reformat my current drives.
