dir-655 is having issues
« on: April 26, 2011, 06:30:23 PM »

So I have my router hooked up, setup is as follows:

QoS is off
Wireless is off
Logs are all unchecked
Advanced DNS is unchecked
I manually entered DNS info and turned on dns relay

Despite this setup, I get random network drops.
Things like irc stay connected, but new webpages stop working. This is happening on multiple computers and I don't know why...

Its a dir-655 revb with 2.01 firmware

I am at a loss at this point...
It started when I first bought the router, then it stopped for a month or so, and now its started again and my family is getting angry.

If I can't get this fixed, any suggestions on a new router? (doesn't have to be wireless)
It just needs to be stable, fast, and I like having 1000mbps lan ports (I stream and share a lot between pcs)

What ISP service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or built in router?

Cable (Road Runner)
Modem only, no built in router.

The modem is new as I thought that might have been the issue.
but new modem and it keeps doing it.

And like I said, it worked fine for awhile with my net but now its just crap.

I tried another router (dgl-4500) and it worked ok (although i was having issues with it being my primary, locking up every 2 days)

I am at a loss as to what to change on the dir655 =/

Seems like you've go 2 routers and both seem to be exhibiting problems. Makes me wonder if this problem lies up stream from the modem. If your on cable, can you verifiy that the cable line is in good condition and there are no or maybe only one splitter on the line? The more splitters on the cable line, the less signal the modem gets and can effect connectivity and thus effects everything else down the line.

After that, Do you see this problem if your directly connected to the ISP modem? Test it for a while.
After that, I would ensure all cabling from the modem to the router is good. Shortest is preferred. I use a 1footer between mine. I know this can't always be the case for most people. I recommend using Cat6 cabling. It's very cheap now days for a complete upgrade from Cat5. You can run CAT5 and 6 together.

I would do a factory reset of the router.
Set up static IP addresses for all devices. Ensure all devices are set up for Auto Obtain IP addressing.
Setup the ISP DNS again under setup/internet/manual if it doesnt' auto fill.
Turn off QoS and Advanced DNS Services.
Turn ON DNS Relay.
I would test with WiFi OFF at this point. Lets see if we can get you a stable wired connection first. Test with  one PC at first then graduate the next. Possible that something down stream could be causing this too so you need to narrow that down if you see anything.

Once you test some wired devices, turn on WiFi, test single mode G only at first.
Come visit us in the DGL-4500 forum if you need help with that. What FW is loaded? I love mine.
Let us know how it goes.

I had already tried all that.

I bought a new router and have had no issues so far. But I would still like to get the dir-655 working...

Did you try all those suggestions on the 655?
Did you test with and with out WiFi being on?
Test with only one device connected?
Try different browsers? Opera, FF, Flock?
How is your network connected. Can you paint us a picture?

Disable uPnP in the router software.  That fixed the problem for me.
