I bought a DIR-655 for my parents after their old router died in a planned power outage. It's a rev. B1 model running the 2.00 firmware. It worked fine initially for a day or two with great wireless coverage, even in the previously low-signal spots in the house.

Then the problems started. The router now has trouble loading any website. What you get is instead a page returned from the router saying something along the lines of "network unreachable, please check you internet settings" (I will go there today or tomorrow so I'll update the post with the specific error). Refreshing the page a few times sometimes makes it load, but extremely slow and then the same thing happens again a few moments later. The same thing happens on both wifi and through the router's LAN ports. If I connect a computer directly to the modem it works just fine, as it has always done before getting this router.

I have disable QoS, NAT endpoint filtering and the firewall (SPI). I have also set the WAN port speed to 100Mbit/s in the router, to match what the modem is set to (also had issues with the default setting).

Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand alone or built in router?

Turn turning off Advanced DNS services and Turn on DNS Relay.
Ensure that Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses are being filled in under setup/internet/manual
Set SPI firewall to endpoint independent for both TCP and UDP.
I would set WiFi to Single mode G or Mixed G and N.
Let us know how it goes.

ISP: Telia, Type: ADSL
Modem: Zyxel 660H (a few years old but has always worked and still does when directly connected or with the earlier router) It's a stand-alone modem.

I just got over here to look more at it. I've not found the Advanced DNS setting but DNS relay was already enabled. It currently seems to be in the short timeframe when it works. It usually stops working after a while.

I also added the DNS servers in the settings. It was already working without them though and I think the router should be getting them via DHCP anyway.

I found the 2.01 beta 5 firmware on d-link's german ftp site. I think I'll give that a try.

Also check to see if DNS relay is enabled. Should be by default and that works well in most cases. DNS addresses sometimes don't get auto filled in so ensure they are. Should be good to go. Keep us posted.

More of less this is what has been happening to mine and a good number of other people here, they just explain it a little differently.

Long story short its just a bad unit, or the DIR-655 just really sucks.
Doing a RMA of mine now after doing everything under the sun to get it to work.
Ok. Interesting. Irritatingly enough it seems to work pretty good as soon as I'm about to do a deeper inspection of it. I have been here once when it happened and it was very noticeable and real.

I received an email today telling me a replacement unit has been sent out from the store I bought it. I have low hopes of it being any different though. We'll have to see if it stays stable.

Btw. how did they describe it? I thought I'd read through those other threads you talk about but not sure which ones you mean.

Hello blunden

As norbs stated several of us are experiencing the same issue as you.  At first I thought it was a bad router and RMA'ed it but when I got the 2nd one I am still having the same issue.  Reading and writing many posts, I think it has something to do with a compability issue with the ISP and the Router (settings).  Most of us have RoadRunner but I noticed you had something different (Telia), but I still believe this is the issue.

Per FuzzyNutz: Check to see if you IPv6 is enabled on the computer and on the Router.  If it is Disable them both and see what happens.

Good Luck

Hmm, ok. I never really intended for a new one to be sent out that quickly to be honest. I was expecting some counter-questions or options for the RMA. I reported it yesterday afternoon and got an email earlier today that a replacement had been sent out and according to the parcel tracking it's almost here already. They never asked for the old one back for some reason so I can compare them, but if this one doesn't work I'll see if I can get them to agree to just refund me if I send them both back and buy something else.

Your experiences are informative, though I feel sorry that you both have the same issue and have been unable to fix it. :(

Brace yourself because your new router may do the same thing as the old one.. as in my case.
Yes, as I said I wouldn't be at all surprised if it did.

It's kind of sad that as soon as D-Link partly regains my trust they go and mess something up again, especially since some owners of the earlier revisions claim this router is the best thing since sliced bread (with the older firmware). I don't doubt that they know how to build nice hardware, I just think their products need a little more attention on the software side. Perhaps they should be using more open source-friendly hardware so that people have a choice of running custom firmware if the official one doesn't suit their needs.
