How do I apply names to devices on my LAN?
« on: April 27, 2011, 01:43:46 PM »

I apologize to all if this very basic problem has previously been addressed in this forum, but I could not get relevant search results for this question.

Thanks!

Simply, while you add it to as a static IP address it will ask you for the name. Once logged into the DGL 4500 admin interface Navigate to Basic > Network Settings > scroll down and you will see Add DHCP reservation, Select the device from the list and pick a name and select save. Now you are done, for further assistance feel free to reply.

Hi guys, thanks. I understand, then, that I can only do this by establishing a static IP address for every single device on my network. I was hoping that would not be necessary, but, whatevs.

I will certainly be asking additional questions in the near future as I refine my network config.

Thanks again!

It's preferred to use static IP addresses for your devices. It helps in troubleshooting and your devices never change IP addresses and in which if they did, could break any rules you set for for those addresses that were setup by DHCP.

Well you can change the name of the devices if you go in to there settings, it will be more difficult but it can be done.

Another way of doing it is

Start > Run > Sysdm.cpl

Then click on change. That will rename your PC, which is usually the info the router is picking up and using when it's listing DHCP leases. DHCP reservation and static IP's (local anyway, not to be confused with bridging public IP's from your ISP) are a good idea for the reasons mentioned above.
