Howdy, y'all,

Firstly, h/w version is E3. F/w version is 5.10.

Trying to initiate a NetMeeting session with a friend's computer. Both PCs are running XP Pro SP3. I configured the DMZ with my XP laptop's subnet IP, which is 192.168.0.105. I can't easily get into his router, or I would have opened port 3389 so that I could connect with Remote Desktop.

He was unable to place a call to my DMZ-ed laptop using the public IP. I use Cox broadband here in SoCal, and there's no mention of DMZ detection and blocking by Cox in their port-filtering list that's available as a support document from Cox. Within the subnet, NetMeeting works correctly. I tried to connect another XP Pro laptop from a neighbor's router, but still no connection via NetMeeting.

Any ideas? Is there a utility program like Microsoft's Netmon that I might use to debug this?

Is Cox Cable or DSL?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or cable?

Try setting up a static IP addresses for all of your devices.
Ensure DNS is being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure DNS relay is enabled under Setup/Networking.
Try setting firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Might have to set up an application rule.
Don't use DMZ if you can help it.
Let us know how it goes.

Short answer, you need access to his router.

The ports have to be forwarded on both sides otherwise this isn't going to work. I can assure you Cox isn't blocking those IP, but if you want to rule out his (assuming its different) then you should both bypass your routers, go direct to the modem, and see if you can connect. If you can, continue reading. If you can't, has nothing to do with the router and outside the scope of this forum.

If your hardware version and firmware has it, you also need to enable it under Firewall settings. See page 45 of this manual.It also suggest you set it as a Virtual Server instead. You do realize this is a pretty complicated set up right? Your probably better off using something like Teamviewer. I don't even think MS supports Netmeeting anymore since Windows 7. Could be wrong though.

Wow; thanks for your excellent responses.

Firstly, NetMeeting isn't supported in Win 7. It wasn't officially part of Vista, but Microsoft released a KB article and patch to support NetMeeting 3.02 on Vista. The patch installer is no longer available from Microsoft, but you can find it using Google.

Secondly, I had hoped that placing the target XP laptop in my DIR-615's (h/w E3, f/w 5.10) DMZ would permit NetMeeting to work. No joy so far.

I simply can't bypass my buddy's router. It's a small biz with broadband supplied by Covad, and he'd hafta move his XP Pro SP3 desktop to a utility room to bypass his router.

My router doesn't offer NetMeeting as an application rule. I'll try open the port ranges in the portforwarding.com article to which you linked. If that doesn't work, I'll install TeamViewer. Too much time wasted on this already.

Keep us posted. I use teamviewer all the time. Really like that app.

I am thinking the issue is on his side then. What I meant is bypass your router, and see if it works. If not, then that rules out your router being the issue. I think Teamviewer may be your best bet because it is designed to sidestep most firewall and such.

TeamViewer: That's the ticket! 

Installed it and it worked without further adjustment of either router.

Gonna purchase the commercial version and use it whenever I hafta do this. As much as I'd like to assuage my curiosity in figgering out what didn't work and why, gotta move on to other endeavors.
