DIR-615: What wireless laser printer would you recommend?
« on: April 30, 2011, 07:14:11 AM »

Hi!

I am new to this wireless router technology. I have purchased a DIR-615 a few days ago and am very happy with the results.

I'd like to find a wireless color laser printer that functions well with this DIR-615. After reading many threads on the net about people having trouble connecting their wireless printer to the DIR-615, I figured that it would be best to ask for your opinion.

Which one(s) have proven to function easily with this router, and which one would you choose?

Any insight would be very appreciated.  8)

Thanks!

I would recommend finding a printer that has both Wired and Wireless capabilities.

OK I'll keep that in mind.

Not sure what kind of features you need, but I had a good experiance with Brother HL-3070CW.  Its not very feauture rich though, so if you need duplexing or advanced networking (like VPN remote printing) you might want to look elsewhere. Any wireless printer is going to be somewhat of a hassle to set up since the UI on the printer is lacking. The trick is to go wired first, so you can access the printers web interface, configure as much as you can in the router and the printers web interface, and once you have the router and printer talking, work on getting the printer and the PC talking. Thats why I like brother, they have alot of options there. This page has most of their drivers for XP including Wireless network programs and hotfixes you can download without downloading the full suite. No offense to HP, but their software has always been heavy handed for me.

Heavy Handed? How so?

Well ... I'm a newbie with this but:
1. My main home PC is on XP.
2. My work laptop is on Vista and ... I connect this laptop onto my wireless network through Nortel connectivity VPN.
Does this mean that the Brother HL-3070CW would not be a good choice?

Note: I'm not too fond of HP either. I once had problems with one of their scanners and a printer. I now shy away from them .. but am sure that others like their products.

Thanks!

Re: DIR-615: Is anybody familiar with Samsung CLP-325W?
« Reply #8 on: April 30, 2011, 02:38:22 PM »

Hi!

I have looked at a Samsung CLP325W at a store nearby and, after reading a good number of reviews about it on the net, am tempted to pull the trigger and purchase it tomorrow.

Does anyone here have any experience with this printer?

Thanks!

@ Furry. Between the HP toolbar.., HP Add-on, the HP Updater, the HP "I am going to annoy you so you buy ink" client...I don't let HP software anywhere near my PC's.

@ Quexpress Its compatible with XP and up. Even compatible with some Windows 2000 setups. As for will it work with your VPN, thats a hard question to answer. I don't know how your VPN functions. But if your a novice, your probably going to have issues with it no mater what printer you get. You can also contact your IT, and see what they suggest.

I will most probably try it tomorrow.

I will certainly contact them if VPN has issues with the printer.

Thanks!

Harry, you do know they make driver only package right? You don't have to install the extra crap. I do understand the frustration there. Funny, there was an article on zdnet the other day talking about how SW like, drivers, apps are being loaded with extra crap. I notice this alot in Java, Adobe, yahoo, a boat load of stuff that users really don't need. I am glad that they do give the option to not install it.

OK
Presently have a Brother HL-4570CDW laser printer set up wireless on my network ... and it functions well.  ;D

Setup was easy (even for a novice).
1. On the printer, manually started the network setup.
2. At one point, choose option WPS, and then pressed on the same button on the side of the DIR-615 router.
3. Printer and router recognized each other ... and a specification page was printed.
4. I went on the D-Link Setup access screen and reserved the shown IP for the printer to be static.
5. Logged on to the printer setup screen on the web by typing in the printer's IP (as reserved on the router).
6. Modified specs as required (static IP, Network key, etc.).
I'm a happy camper with this one. ;D
I'm anxious to see how it functions with other PCs on my network (especially the one on VPN).

Note: Yesterday I have tried setting up a Samsung CLP325W ... with no success at all. I could use it with cable ... but not wireless. I have returned this morning and purchase the Brother HL-4570CDW ... and am very happy with it (up until now LOL).

Thanks for your help in insight everyone! It is very appreciated!

I think your and my definition of a novice is different then yours. I thought this was going to be your first wireless printer. A novice to me would not know hot to set up DHCP reseverations or get into the routers gateway. So to me, your no novice. Heh. Props

Thanks for the kind words but ... before the end of last week, I had never read nor done anything with wireless networks, etc.
Everything I have done was with the help of this forum, the instructions booklets, and reading on the net.
