PPPOE Troubles

DIR-655 w/latest firmware
Westell A90
Bellsouth 3 meg DSL

This set up has been running pretty solid for years now. The other night I came home to no Internet. After a few hours of troubleshooting, re-setting and re-configuring, it seems that the D-Link won't hold a PPPOE connection. The Westell on it's own will hold PPPOE connections fine. When I put it in bridged mode without DHCP on, set the D-Link for PPPOE, the D-Link log reports that after a few seconds, the PPPOE connection terminates. I tried an older Netgear router and that holds the PPPOE connection fine. I'm now running with PPPOE on the modem and DHCP on the router. Not the best setup.
Does anyone know if Bellsouth/AT&T changed anything that would cause a D-Link to wig out, or did it just stop working with PPPOE connections?

Is the Always On enabled on the 655 router?
Make sure cabling is good condition between the modem and router.
What do the logs say on the router when this happens?

Yup - Always On. I don't have the exact syntax, but you can see in the log of the 655 where the PPPOE connection gets established, then PPPOE terminates then says PPP network down - within seconds. This repeats every time a connection is attempted. Tried different cables as well. Another brand older router works fine with PPPOE.

Something changed. Don't know if it's the ISP or the router, but it worked flawlessly for years.

Hmmm...have you done any FW updates on the router as of yet?
Disconnect all devices accept for one PC.
Factory reset using the Tools/System.
Go back in and set up PPPoE and Always ON.
Turn off QoS and any traffic shapping.
Ensure Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses are being auto filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn off Advanced DNS Service if you have this option.
Ensure DNS relay is ON.
Turn off WiFi for now and just test wired connection. Turn it on later.

If a different router works, I presume there is something going on with the 655. It's possible that maybe the DSL modem could be having an issue it...the router would reflect that the connection is terminating because of the modem not giving signals. Might need to run the old router with the modem with everything going for a while and see if it exhibits the same issues. If not then you'll know.

Pretty much did all that except turning off wireless. I did leave the other router on for a day without issue, except that is a "g" - too slow and doesn't have the features of the 655.

Was gonna buy another D-Link. I just wanted to be sure that my ISP wasn't doing anything funky that the 655 couldn't handle.

Ok,
Well if the DLink doesn't behave with the suggested settings using one or more PCs.
I might try a FW update, after that if it's still acting up, then I would return or RMA the unit.
