Reseated Hard Drive - now wants to format
« on: May 14, 2011, 03:05:54 AM »

Hi

One of my hard drives suddenly no longer showed up when I turned the 323 on - I was getting a white light on that side of the box. I opened the 323, re-seated the drive and turned the machine back on. Now when i go to the config page, it wants to format the drive!

Drive would show up under Physical Disk Info, but not under Hard Drive info

That is the last thing I want to do with a terabyte of data on it. (No lectures on backups please. This is not vital data, but stuff I would rather not have to download again.  :-X  ..)

Why the heck does it want to format it!!??

NB - Firmware 1.06 (if it ain't broke...)

The question perhaps should be why was it showing a "white" light?

A white LED indication is undocumented and appears to be the result of both blue & amber LEDs being on simultaenously - and I suspect is the result of some sort of failure (that's why the amber light turns on).

Failed drive - file system apparently no longer recognized & possibly corrupt - hence the prompt to reformat?

Oh - please consider the above to be just me thinking aloud than any statement of fact.

As requested I will avoid the lecture on backup - try connecting to a PC with either linux or Windows and a linux file system driver (there are several) and see if you can reach the data that way.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Cheers for that...

Will have to trawl over to a mates house for his linux box. only laptops here nowadays!

I do wonder why something like this would suddenly happen - unless it IS a drive failure. There is no reason really why the file system would suddenly stop working, surely? Dlink - any help here??
