Two DGL-4500s on one network, how to do it?
« on: January 20, 2009, 11:58:57 AM »

I bought one DGL4500 for my home and love it.  It is currently on the second floor, and I have a second DGL4500 that I would like to add in the basement for better signal strength there.  The first one gives a weak signal to the basement, and relocating the first DGL4500 to the first floor is not practical.  What settings do I have to change/disable on the second DGL4500 to basically turn it into a high-performance wireless access point?  I know I would have to disable DHCP, and give it another address besides the default 192.168.0.1  What other settings do I need to change to have both compatible on one network?  Can they both use the same SSID?
My home network is a cable-modem to an 8-port 10/100/1000 Dlink switch, then to the DGL4500.  When I add the second DGL4500, would it best be connected via the switch, or via a port on the first DGL4500?  If it helps, connecting to this network are three laptops, two desktops, two printers, two Wiis and a Sony PSP.  Any help and advice greatly appreciated

Mistake on the 1st reply. Connect the 2nd dgl-4500 to the 1st and turn off (the 2nd) features so they wont overlap.

Anon,
Thanks for the reply, but part of my question is, what other specific features would I need to disable/change, other than the DHCP, and the network address?
Anyone with the experience of doing this?

This one is tricky, I did it with my dgl-4500 and dir-655.  What I did was first connect the first router port 1 to the second router port 1 not wan port, then setup the dhcp, DHCP Reservation, MAC filters, and internet.  To get them connected correctly set the first router's IP such as 192.168.x.1 and start 192.168.x.2 to 192.168.x.250, set the DHCP Reservation up for the second router 192.168.x.2, put in the second routers MAC address into the first router mac filter,  and setup the internet as normal.  On the second router turn off the, DHCP Reservation, MAC filter, internet and setup the DHCP IP address for the second router as 192.168.x.2.  For the wireless, you must have the security setup on both of them. You may need to connect a computer to the second router to set it up and turn on DNS relay in network settings.

DragonMixer, thanks for the advice.  Yours looks similar to what I found as I did more research.  Would you or anyone else with time and experience follow this link to let me know if this sounds correct? The date is older, but the advice sounds the same.  Anything else specific to the dgl-4500 or other suggestions?

It sounds like I can remove the 8 port switch between the cable modem and the first DGL-4500.
As always, all advice appreciated  :)

if you dont use the ports on the switch then you can remove it and put in place a dgl-4500. Only thing i can think of is next time just buy a ap/bridge.

It looks like most of it is good.  I never configured the WAN on my second router and it still works.  As for the switch you can remove it until you need more ports.  Anything else like port forwarding, gamefuel, virtual server, etc can be configured on the first router.  The things that I said in the previous post are the ones to configure on the second router.
