2.4Ghz drops daily needs a reboot to resolve
« on: May 15, 2011, 08:29:38 PM »

Hi all... I sifted through the forum a bit, but was unsure what specific search terms to use to isolate my issue.

I have had issues with my Dir-825 revision B router since the 1st day I put it in place. (about 2 weeks ago)
2 laptops that both use 802.11G lose connectivity 1 to 2 times every 24 hours.

I have tried the latest firmware that is available from the website...
I have even installed a recent build of DD-WRT to see if it would resolve the problem.

The issue appears to be consistent across multiple firmware versions.

I have resorted to hooking up a remote control for Christmas lights to the router so I can turn it off/on from my family room!  :)

Anyway.. I have ordered some 802.11N adapters for both laptops in an attempt to see if the 5Ghz/802.11n band will fair better.

If anyone has a reference to potential resolutions to my described issue it would be most appreciated.

Thanks for your time and effort.

It's possibly a problem with signal strength or interference from other devices.  Use a program like inSSIDer from metageek.net to see if your 2.4GHz bandwidth is crowded.  Then possibly set a fixed channel to get the strongest signal.

If you're using a cordless phone see if you can change the channel on the phone.

I've running 3 wireless G cameras 24/7 + a laptop on N @ night on my 825 and I rarely have to reboot my router.

I grabbed inSSIDer per your suggestion.  My signal was the strongest in the list of results.  I narrowed down my bandwidth to  channel 8.. this was not used by any others that I could see.

I'll check the phones to be sure, but I think my home wireless phones are 5.8Ghz.

It's an odd recurrence of drops.  Just the 2.4Ghz stops working/becomes unconnectable...   The LAN side stays live with no problems.    For the most part it appears to be every 24 hours or so.
My previous router had no problems on with auto select on channel freq using 802.11G.

This occurs on 2 different laptops with 2 different chipsets..

anyway.. thanks for the feedback.  I'll post back with any results in the next day or so.  If anyone else has to reboot their router daily.. let me know.

Try setting up single mode G and test for a short period to see if you experience the same problem on that mode.

Do you have anything that support N mode on 5Ghz to test?

I would turn off the house phones or unplug them for a test just to make sure your not getting interference from them.

Set up DHCP reserved IP addresses for ALL devices connected to the router on the routers web page under Networking.

I'll give it a shot.  I don't have any "N" based wifi right now.   I have 2 adapters on order as a fallback plan... should be here by end of week.

I will try the reserved DHCP address idea.  FurryNutz, are you aware of issues related to DHCP and dropoffs?

Not fully aware of many drop offs as alot of the issues I've seen are configuration issue or environmental interference issues. Keep us posted on G mode tests.

I reserved DHCP for all the PC's that connect to the router today.
This evening both laptops lost wifi again simultaneously.
No one was using the telephone in the house, nor cell phone.
It seems to happen about every 24 hours around 8-9pm.

I will test with N when my adapters arrive.

I find the timing/frequency of the drops to be odd.    Like some threshold is hit in the course of about 24 hours over and over.     I do use a bit torrent client if that's something that could be an additional concern.

both laptops are getting 4 out of 5 bars in the win7 wireless client.

but I don't wanna not do bit torrent  :P

I'm running bit torrent on a server that's connected via LAN to the router, not over wireless.

I'll put that in the mix for the next test.  signal has been holding strong since last night, so I want to see if it holds.

I narrowed down to channel 6 and my signal quality indicator on the router for the 2 laptops went up to about 45% (up from around 20% on automatic mode and the other channels I aimed for based on INssider info.)

Well.. still waiting on "N" adapters in the mail.. so no testing there yet.

I killed Bit Torrent just for kicks.  I also moved the router about 25 feet closer to the laptops that use the wireless.
I have to say that the power/range on this unit is nothing like the old Linksys "B/G" router I used to use.

I haven't had a drop off in about 30 hours now.

I'll re-enable Bit torrent tomorrow and see if that is a trigger to problems or not.

Thanks all for the help.  I'll also test with the N adapters when they arrive and post.

ya, I agree, I think the older Linksys routers had better range.
You can get a bit better range by setting to single modes or Mixed G and N.
I just got my 825 last nite and been playing with it. Been doing pretty good so far.
I set up single mode G on 2.4Ghz and Single mode N on 5Ghz. I only have 1 N supported LT.

Keep us posted.

I have N disabled, and have single mode G set on the other.
I played with increasing power with settings using DD-WRT, but noticed no difference when I tested it.

Thanks again for your input.

If you can still return the router and get a new one, I would, I have seen this in other posts and it is something usually hardware related. You have used both DD-WRT and stock, at this point the firmware is at the bottom of the list. My kid got busted running a bittorrent server when I kept running into slow downs, usually when I would get home from work early and he was in school. When I ran a log there was some crazy amount of people connected (hundreds) and my inetrnet was maxed at 30 x 2 (limewire). My household has BEAT on this router with still no failure for 6 months. 2 xboxs at once, bittorrent, streaming video, the darn thing even got hit with 60 x 60 mbps for a couple of weeks. The only time it has reset is when I have done it! Hardware rev B1.
