DIR-655 WAN port not working
« on: May 19, 2011, 07:50:43 PM »

Hello all,

Recently, something weird occurred. My Motorola Surfboard cable modem (on PenTeleData/Service Electric) and my D-Link DIR-655 don't seem to be getting along.

If I plug a network cable directly from the modem into a computer, it works fine. However, if I go from the modem to the router's WAN port, it doesn't seem to want to connect to the router at all (no matter what DNS settings I change on the router (including spoofing the MAC address of a working computer) or which network cables I use; the "activity" light on both the router and the modem remain off).

Also, if I take a network cable and plug one end in one of the LAN ports on the router and the other end in the WAN port, it works (well, the "internet" activity light on the front of the router comes on and the status page at http://192.168.0.1/Status/Device_Info.shtml says "Cable Status: Connected; Network Status: Incorrectly configured - check logs" instead of "Cable Status: Disconnected; Network Status: Disconnected").

I'm not sure if this is the router or the modem acting up. Anyone have any suggestions?

P.S. I did try doing a hard reset and a firmware update on the router, to no avail...

Make sure when switch the modem from PC to the router that you power cycle the modem too.  That way it gives your router the IP address from your ISP.

I tried that; nothing is working (it doesn't seem to wnt to give the router an IP at all...)

Also, another weird thing... When I first power on the router (with nothing connected to it except one computer in the first LAN port), the status page (http://192.168.0.1/Status/Device_Info.shtml) reports "Cable Status: Connected; Network Status: Establishing (please wait...)". Then, when I plug in the network cable that is connected to the modem, it changes to "Cable Status: Disconnected; Network Status: Disconnected".

Try different cable.

Power one modem first and let it sync. I presume that when PC is connected to it directly all is good?
After modem is on, connect LAN cable to WAN port on 655 and power on. Check status.

I tried that just now - it's still not working (according to the router, everything is disconnected, and the activity indicator on the modem continues to stay off).

Do you think that this is the modem or the router? (The router does recognize a connection if I put it in a loop with itself by running a cable from one of the LAN ports to the WAN port.)

Yes, it does, but as I mentioned above if I connect one of the router's LAN ports to the router's WAN port, the LED "internet" indicator blinks furiously (compared to not even being lit when connected to the modem).

Also, if I go from the modem to one of the router's LAN ports, both the indicator light on the router (for the LAN port) and the one on the modem are on (but this doesn't really do anything).

What model Motorola cable modem do you have?
Are you using a straight thru LAN cable and not a cross over cable?
You have the Setup/Internet/Manual set for Automatic DHCP connect?

Only other way to check is to take the router to a different place that has a different modem and see if it connects there or try a different cable modem and see if it connects or not. Friend or Neighbors house. Then you'll know.

If this is a new router, I would call tech support.  It's possible that the WAN port is defective and you may need to get the router replaced.  Let them know that you have been posting in the forums and it was suggested to call them.

Or, if its still under warranty from where you bought it, you can return it there for a replacement.

Motorola SURFboard SB5120
Normal LAN cable
Automatic DHCP

This isn't really a new router - I have had it for at least half a year, and it had been working fine with the cable modem. These problems didn't start until a few days ago.

Im having the same problem. Motorola Surfboard SBV5121 Was working perfect for a year o so, last week I had no link conection between the Modem and the router. Modems was online.

Funny thing is that the router works perfect at my job, also worked perfect in my cousins house with 5120 modem.

My ISP changed my modem and still it will not link with a SBV 5121 modem.

Possible that this SB 5121 modems are not compatible? Was there any update on the MODEM resently? Might ask you ISP about this.

Any chance you can try a SB 6120 to test?
