looking to upgrade switch
« on: May 24, 2011, 04:25:54 PM »

Currently have dir-655 rev a4 firmware 1.21 was leary of upgrading firmware wen saw wouldnt be able to downgrade back.
dsl is currently at 1.5mbs getting ready to upgrade to 40mbs once they finish putting fiber in the new neighborhood.
have cat 5 that i wired myself troughout the house, when i hook up my pc directly to the router it says i have a gigabit conection, but when going through the switch it drops down to 100mbs. so i know i need to upgrade the switch.
isnt the dir-655 supose to have switching on its 4 ports? when ever i am hooked directly to it and i start downloading tv shows to watch later on my tv, it bogs the everyone else down to where they can hardly even browse the web.

What is the problem?

Cat5 doesn't support gigabit.

edit: Do you mean cat5e?

First of, you need to trouble shoot the issue first before lastly upgrading FW.

Sounds like you might have a odd cable issue here or something your not doing right in the connections. Can you give us a lay out of your network?
Might look like this:
DSL Modem> to WAN port on 655 router< PC connected to one of the 4 LAN ports in back of the 655 router.

If you have DSL, Try and bridge that if you can if it has a built in router. If not then you should be ok.

I recommend getting CAT 5(e) or CAT6 cabling. Ensure cabling is in good working condition.

opps sorry for the typo i do have 5e

it goes dsl modem > dir-655 > trendnet TE100-DX8Eplus then to pc's

if i connect pc a and pc b to the dir-655 and if pc a starts downloading through rapidshare or vuze or gaming ,,,then pc b takes 10-30 sec for a page to come up when browsing the net.

If your seeing 10-30 sec page load times while your doing a download or streaming, means those are probably getting more bandwidth and the load page is getting less.
You might want to set up QoS for these devices so each one gets equal amount of band width.
