Loosing WIFI AP. It just disappear from any ssid scan
« on: June 10, 2011, 04:58:43 AM »

Hi
I have a dir-655 Firmware Version 2.00, hardware:B1
It's a new wireless router and it's just a week ago I got it.

My problem is that the wireless is just stopping to work, it just disappear.
When I do a rescan of wireless AP's the ssid and my AP is not showing up.
I have to reboot the router the hard way by unplugging the power source.

I have multiple computers and wireless devices, and they all loose connection and no one even see the ssid (AP) defined on my dir-655.

It's connected to a cable modem switch (without nat), I'm running dhcmp on my router. No Qos engine is enabled.
This happens when I'm working from home with a VPN tunnel from my pc to my companies network.

I've tried to make a ticket on this on dlink support pages, but their support system only works on IE7, and the password is anyway rejected.
That's smart thinking DLINK support staff, no support/error issues are registred, indication no queues and all tickets solved. I bet your support statistics to management is perfect.

well, any ideas out there how to solve the termination of my wifi ap?
Is there a way to enable logging for dlink support to analyze?

Try changing the WiFi mode from Mixed to Single mode G or Mixed G and N. Let us know.

What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only.
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

I hope I don't appear out of line here, but I have to be honest.  Your problem is being experienced by many others, including myself.  You can see on this forum about others encountering the same problem.
Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a solution, and it seems to be a hardware problem with this revision router.  If you do not want to go through the hassle of trying to troubleshoot your router, and you still have the option for exchange, I would trade it for a different model.  This is a very nice router, but this problem is too common to be ignored.

That's just my suggestion based on reading about others who have experienced the same issue.  I have read of no one that figured out the problem was due to a setting in the router.  Good luck.

Let see if by providing some information and doing some troubleshooting first might help his problem. The problem may or may not be ignored however there are many factors in ANY router working. Yes, I understand, routers should work well right out of the box. However experience has shown me that these other factors can impact how any routers work coming out of the box.

The router has worked well for six months - only a few times it lost connection.
But the last few days I have lost the connection continuously.
Every half hour, not only the wireless connection lost internet also the hardwire connection.
I've followed some of the advice here: I've enable mixed n and g mode, wireless channel 13, channel with auto 20/40, WPA Personal, WPA 2 AES only.
Some of these options was set before, other I just enabled now.

I have many wireless devices connected to the router - wireless and hardwired, exampel smart phones, ipad, TV's, computers,  two satelitte decoder, cable TV decoder, Slingbox, wireless land phone/skype unit, Intenet radio box, I'm sure its more.

I begin to wonder if this is too much for the DIR-655 wireless router?

A wireless router is supposed to work out the box, maybe I should look for a more solid wireless hardware?

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out. Need to find out if any other WiFi routers are near by that could be effecting this.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

There is 15 other wireless networks around me.
I did disable the "Short GI" , but there was no option for "Extra Wireless Protection" under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
I have DIR-655, hardware B1 and firmware version 2.0

eew...15 other networks huh? Are they all on the 2.4Ghz freqency?

This is one reason why your 655 maybe dropping connections. It's having to try and find a open channel thats not being used. The other WiFi routers maybe using any one of them at any time and bumping in to your channel that the router is currently using at the time, so being on AUTO Scan, it detects a problem, stops your connections, then go to find a another channel. It keeps doing this since it's having problems maintaining a good channel.

Try to find a open or channel thats not being used or see if there is a channel being used by a router with very low signal or farthest away. Set manual channel here and test.

Let us know.

Something to try, try lowering the power output of the 655 router from High to Medium and test. This makes a smaller foot print for your area.

One other way to find out if these are effecting your router, take this router to a different area, hopefully somewhere with just a few or no other WiFi routers. Friend or families place with Internet and test. I bet the disconnections wont track there.

Any of the routers near by using 5Ghz? Might be an option for you to go 5Ghz. I know that not all devices support or can be upgraded to 5Ghz.  :-\
