DIR-655 = The Headache Creator!
« on: June 10, 2011, 07:55:13 AM »

I have a DIR-655 with Hardware Version: A4  and Firmware Version: 1.34EU (DIR655A4_FW134EUb07Beta).

However I am having serious problems.

My download speeds are limited to 2.3 MB/s (goes up and down), however I should reach approx. 14.5 MB/s (big difference).

The weird thing is, when I flash the router to a different firmware (already tried DIR655A4_FW131EUB02 & DIR655A4_FW134EUb07Beta), it works without problems and downloads at 14.5 MB/s in the newsgroups. However as soon as I save something in the router and reboot then my speeds drop again to 2.3 MB/s.

I already checked various settings including my firewall settings, disabled wireless completely, changed to OpenDNS servers, disabled / enabled advanced DNS settings, etc. etc. etc. It doesn't matter it stays stuck at 2.3 MB/s, unless I flash the router again. Then it works once again at 14.5 MB/s, until I save something again in my router. And I do need to save, cause otherwise my router is unprotected. :S

Funny thing is, my older router, which I have here also is a DIR-635 and that works without problems, however due to 100 mbit WAN port, my speeds are limited to 12.5 MB/s instead of 14.5 MB/s. Yeah I know, only 2 MB/s difference. But still I thought the DIR-655 would be a better match, then the DIR-635.

Anyone knows what is causing this? I am really getting fedup with my DIR-655. And because of all this crap, I am thinking about stopping to use D-Link stuff permantly!

What ISP service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or built in router?
Try changing the cables between the router and ISP modem?

Cables are not the issue.
Provider is not the issue.
The provider's modem is not the issue.

Cause; like stated in the post above, I have a DIR-635 as well, and this one works without problems. It only happens the with the ****ty DIR-655.

The only downside of the DIR-635 is that it is limiting my internet speed at 12.5 MB/s (cause of the 100 mbit WAN-port). The DIR-655 offers better speeds due to the 1000 Mbit WAN-port.

I would Update to a current release of FW for your region:
Factory reset.
Update FW.
Factory reset once more.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? Use ISP DNS for testing.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Thank you for your reply...

The "Advanced DNS Services" only shows up in the older firmware versions, if I am correct. Anyways, it's not in the current firmware version.

The rest I have already tried, but the same result. My speeds go down to 2.3 MB/s. No matter what I do or change, it will remain at 2.3 MB/s, until I flash it with a firmware (doesn't matter which version), then I am able to download at full speed (14.5 MB/s), however when I save something in the control panel of the DIR-655 the speeds go down again. That's the strangest thing.

I will retry tomorrow again. What's the best and most reliable firmware version for the DIR-655 and I don't mind using an old version, as long as it works.

@FurryNutz

I re-tried everything today. Even downloaded and installed the stock 1.21 Firmware. Did a 30/30/30 before flash and afterwards.

Then I checked the following:

- DNS IP addresses are correct (tried both ISP's and OpenDNS).
- Turn off Advanced DNS Services (not included in 1.21)
- Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking = Enabled.
- Device has an IP through DHCP or static = No difference.
- Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP = Done.
- NOD32 disabled, but shouldn't make a difference.
- Only 1 PC connected by wire and wireless completely turned off.

With the above settings and 1.21 the results are even worse than previously. Now I can only download at 906 KB/s (and average of 757 KB/s). Wow! Excellent product D-Link... Sheesh. And this is already my 2nd DIR-655, after RMA-ing the first one. DIR-655 = Cr4p Product.

When I put back my old, simple DIR-635 the download speeds are back to normal (still not 100%, but that's because of the 100 mbit WAN-port on the DIR-635).

Now I am going to redo everything, again, but with firmware 1.35NA. If it's still going to show the same results, I will put the router in the microwave just for fun and RMA it.

I am really fed up with this DIR-655 and I remember when the router was released that this was the router to purchase, excellent product. Yeah right, my a$$.

Anyways, this will be my last D-Link product I purchased. Good thing I decided to upgrade my home router to an Asus RT-N56U. Asus also has cr4p support, but at least their products work.

Will report back after re-doing everything with 1.35NA.

Ensure you turn off QoS fully along with using the other options as you mentioned. Have see QoS interfere with speeds if it's not setup correctly. TUrn it off for testing. Make sure you disable all QoS features. Let us know.

Well I have given up. So since I will be getting a real brand router, I decided to put my DIR-655 in the microwave. Really nice effect and I can recommend it to everyone who hate their D-Link!

Goodbye and good riddance to D-Link!
