Replacing existing 1TB HDD with new 2TB HDD
« on: June 10, 2011, 05:20:02 PM »

Hi Guys,

I have been using DNS-323 with 1TB WD Cavier Black for more than a year now.
I want to replace this 1TB HDD with another new 2TB HDD, and take out 1TB out of DNS-323.
I will install this 1TB (coming out of DNS-323) in my PC and inventually I will also install second 2TB HDD in DNS-323 to compete the DNS-323 with 4TB disk space.

Can somebody suggest me how to move the data from existing 1TB HDD to new 2TB directly.

Thanks,

Install the new drive. Install FFP to get Telnet access. Then 'cp' or 'mv' the files from one drive to the other. Remove 1TB drive.
Rather than use FFP, I believe you can use the backup function included in the firmware although I've never tried it.

Hey guys,

I have a similar inquiry. I have a 1TB drive and I want to add on a second drive, a 2TB drive, to the second slot.

First, is it possible to mix and match drive sizes or must both disks in the NAS be of equal size? I don't need RAID, I just need the extra capacity.

Second, I would need to move the files from the 1TB drive to the second 2TB drive due to organizational structure. Can this done easily by dragging and dropping from Windows Explorer or is there a better/faster way? My concern is the NAS and drives overheating if transferring constantly for a day or so.

Also, I usually transfer files to and from the NAS and PC and the speed shows about 10 MB per second. Is this normal?

Appreciate any advise, thank you.

You can mix drive sizes.

Dragging and dropping files (remote copy) means the data is transfered from the DNS323 to your PC, then back to the DNS323. This is slow. There are many threads on using FFP (google it) or the built in backup function to move data directly from one drive to another.
