D-Link DIR-655 Cappped Internet Speeds?
« on: June 11, 2011, 05:13:56 PM »

Hello,

I just purchased a 100M fiber line to go with a brand new D-Link DIR-655 router. Before plugging in the router, I tested on my laptop directly from the modem and had great result speeds of 98M/97M. I connected the router, then plugged my laptop to find I was only getting speeds of about 10M/6M. This was true for both wired and wireless connections.

I took a look at the router settings. I turned off QoS, but that didn't help. One thing I did see was the WAN was set to auto. I attempted to change that to 100mbps or to 1000mpbs. However, when I did that my modem light that shows a 100M connection is active turned off and I couldn't get internet. I was only able to get a connection if I left that on auto. Is there a setting somewhere that is limiting my bandwidth from the router?

I reset the router twice and checked to find I had the latest firmware. Is there something that I am missing? I have always been a Linksys fan, but wanted to see how D-Link is. Thanks!

Try swapping out the Cable between the modem and router?

I tried that, but will again on Monday.  I did read on here about changing a few settings that I didn't do, so I will do that again on Monday.  I will update back then.

LEt us know,
Do a factory reset of the router, Turn off QoS engine fully.
Setup Firewall to Endpoint Independent on TCP and UDP.
Try testing with Advanced DNS Services and DNS relay ON and off.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn off Protested WiFi and items that you might not use. You can always turn them on later.
Verify your speeds over wired connections. Verify Direct to ISP modem then with router.

Hey Furry,

Same issue persists even after changing the settings that you had suggested.  Do you know of anything else?  I did read of others faking out the upload speed, but there is a restriction on how high that can be.  I can't get it to go higher than 3mpbs.

Thanks for your help!

Did you change out the Cable? Try Cat6 to be sure.
What isp do you have?
What ISP modem do you have? Make and model?
Does the ISP modem support a Gb connection or only 100Mb connection?
Can try turning off uPnp to test.
Turn on Unicasting and test.

Yes. I have changed the cable.  Same result.  I am using cat5e.

The provider I am using is Cogent Communications, 100meg fiber connection.

The weird part is my friend provided me with DI-742Gu to test (D Link Wireless 108G router) that is like 2 years old and it worked perfectly after I set up the wireless and static ip.  I changed nothing else after resetting it back to factory settings before putting in my settings.  So there is something definitely wrong with the DIR-655.

And you turned everything off on the 655 as far as features go and set up Reserved IP addresses for your devices on the router.
Setup Firewall to Endpoint Independent on TCP and UDP.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services and DNS relay ON.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.

Might do a search on your provider and using a router and see if anyone else has notice this same problem. Check for MTU value settings. Cable ISP are usually 1500, DSL is usually 1492 thru 1472. Might be different for Fiber ISP.
