Dumb question - Upgrading to FW 1.10 with EARS
« on: June 13, 2011, 08:57:58 AM »

Hi Guys, this may have been covered and may be a dumb question.. BUT lol..

i'm currently running stock firmware V1.08 on my Rev C1? hardware (UK spec).

I have 2 x 2TB drives in at present in a JBOD config. The drives are advanced format type.
If i upgrade to F/W 1.10 for "proper" advance format support will i need to move the data frist and then put it all back??? i've about 3.5TB on the drives.. so would struggle to save it else where i think..

any advice would be fab.. and i only want to stay with JBOD so no need to go raid1 etc

Thanks.

To configure with 4K alignment, you must reformat.

Posting the way you did will likely invite a whole discussion about backups :)

1 - You WILL need to format the drives to benefit from the advanced format, which means what ever data is on them will be destroyed, so if you don't have a back up, you WILL need to make one before commencing on the exercise

2 - With a JBOD configuration, failure of either disk WILL result in ALL of the data becoming inaccessible - you say you would struggle to save it elsewhere?  How much of a struggle would it be to recreate it?

It really is your choice, but if you don't back it up, then expect to lose it at some point.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Thanks for the replies guys...

i sort of figured that might be the case.. and yes i was aware that loss of a drive in JBOD would result in total data loss. Looks like i'll have to source some space to move the files while i'm sorting it. Such is life.

I'll lock the thread now as i've got the answer i was looking for.

Thanks again!
