Can't obtain a DHCP address for IP Phone
« on: June 17, 2011, 08:17:51 AM »

I have an Avaya IP Phone for work.  This has been tested at work and works as expected.  After the IP Phone boots it's able to obtain an IP address from work.  At home when I plug the IP phone into my DIR-655 router, it's unable to obtain an IP address.  Other network devices are able to obtain an IP address, for example any computer or laptop.  Also my wireless works with no issues expect for the IP phone.  I've already done some searching and found other users with the same issue but I haven't been able to find a solution other than setting a static IP address.  I'm curious why this relatively new router won't work with an IP phone.  I've played with some of the router settings but it didn't make a difference.  Has anyone else experienced this issue or have a work \around to get the DHCP to work?  I'm running the latest firmware for my router: 1.35A Hardware Versions: A4.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

This Avaya IP phone require specialized HW for it to work?
IF this IP phone is like the Cisco business class phones, then these phones don't work on these types of routers. They require specialized HW for them to work correctly.

Not that I'm aware of, it's a standard IP Phone that our company provides to it employees.  I seem to be the only one in our group that's having this issue.  I've already brought the phone back to have telecom check the phone and it's fine.  My other team members are using consumer Linksys routers or routers that are provided by their ISP (cable and DSL) so I know it doesn't require any special HW for it to work.  One user said he's had his Linksys router for 2 years and the IP phone worked with no issues.  Odd, that the D-Link DIR-655 is unable to work with this Avaya IP Phone (4610SW IP).  If anyone else has a suggestion then please let me know.  Otherwise, it sounds like Linksys is the way to go.  :'(

Thanks!

Hi,

This is a complete guessing solution. I have read someone posted how he solved his printer connection by unchecked Use Unicast in Manual internet connection setup-dynamic IP internet connection type. May be it's worth a try.

Does the mfr of the IP phone have any recommended configurations for routers? Thinks to look for like Firewalls, port forwarding, or Application Level Gateway (ALG) Configurations?

Can try setting Firewall to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP and test.

Do you need to use proxy server setting in internet option-> lan setting, proxy server address and port number ?

I would call the support for this phone and ask them if there are any specialized settings for routers and see if they can help. Let us know.

Thanks for your input, I don't think it's an issue with the proxy or firewall; the phone never gets an IP address.  I've already tried restoring the router to the factory default settings and still no go.  I've also tried disabling many of the features the router provides but it still doesn't provide an IP address.  I was able to get the phone to work by setting a manual IP address but I was trying to avoid this and wanted to know why the phone won't work with the IP phone.  Once again, hanks for your input. It sounds like the two are not compatible (hard to believe in this day and age...so much for standards).
