network stops working for wired PC connections
« on: June 20, 2011, 10:21:18 PM »

I have a DIR-655 with both wired and wireless connections. Yesterday, network stopped working on one wired machine while using it to surf the internet and a 2nd wired machine has not worked in 3 weeks after moving it from one room to another. Wireless connections are working fine.

2 wired systems (Windows 7 and Windows XP), both stopped working
2 wired Xboxes - working fine
2 laptops, wireless – working fine
1 smart phone, wireless – working fine

I've power cycled my DSL modem and DIR-655 multiple times.
Power cycled computer multiple times. Tried Win7 built-in diagnostics.
Tried setting up static IPs.
Tried filling in preferred DHCP server address.
Disabled Windows firewall

ipconfig shows:
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . :  169.254.53.56
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . :  255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
but previously, it was:
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.187
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

If it matters, machine is Dell Studio XPS with  Intel 82567LF Gigabit Network Controller and up to date drivers.

Network troubleshooting options don’t work and report a variety of errors, including:
“Local Area Connection” doesn’t have a valid IP connection
This adapter is configured to obtain an IP address automatically, but no DHCP server is present on the network.
Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

any suggestions?

What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or does it have a built in router by chance?

What wireless modes are you running? Try Mixed G and N? Try Single G orN?
What FW version is currently loaded?
Any cordless phones in the house?

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled.

thanks for the suggestions!

more info:
Modem is Westell WireSpeed with no built in router.
Wireless mode is mixed and i haven't tried changing this.
Firmware is 1.02 - i haven't updated due to feedback from forums and coworkers. Should i update?

Yes, there's a cordless phone in the house (Uniden 2.4 GHz).

I've tried static IPs, and just tried again, but no luck. Maybe i'm doing it wrong? Do i need to change any settings on the DIR655 if i'm configuring one machine's IP as static?

Under Setup/Internet/Manual, there's nothing set - it looks like it's all defaults:
Use this Internet connection type if your Internet Service Provider (ISP) didn't provide you with IP   Address information and/or a username and password.

Host Name :.
Use Unicasting :(compatibility for some DHCP Servers) .
Primary DNS Server :.
Secondary DNS Server :.
MTU : (bytes) MTU default = 1500.
MAC Address :.

I'm not sure where to check for Advanced DNS Service.
DNS Relay is enabled.

I didn't mention before - this has all been working fine for months. I had some trouble about 6 months ago and while troubleshooting, things just started working again. Only recent change was 3 weeks ago to add Smartphone to wireless.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can get these from Status/device info/Wan Section.

Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option. It's under Setup/Internet/Manual.

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Try this before updating to see if it will help.
