DIR-651 loses connection
« on: June 21, 2011, 03:22:08 PM »

Hi,

Please note that I have DIR-651, but I don't find any forum for it, so I'm posting here, apologies if this is not the appropriate forum.

I installed the 651 in my wife's office about a month ago or so.  She has one desktop computer connected on Cat5e or Cat6 cable (don't remember which it is), one notebook and a tablet.  First few days everything was good, but then the router starts disconnecting the wireless.  It seems to cycle, 5 minutes on, then 2 minutes off or so.  None of the wireless devices will connect.  The cabled LAN computer has no problems and connects without any problems at any time.  Provider is Wave Broadband.  Notebook runs XP, tablet runs android and I have also experienced the same problem using the LG android phone - connection just drops and then connection is refused if I try again while it's down.

There is no other electronics in her office, except a printer, but there are other offices in the building with whatever equipment they may have.  The distance from the router is at most 20 feet and I have tried to connect with my phone within a feet from the router without success.  WHen it connects, my phone and the other devices indicate the strenght of the signal is "Excellent"

I don't know where to start looking!  Any help would be most appreciated:)

Best regards,

Arnor Baldvinsson

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2.

I just want to chime in as an angry customer and not recommend this router.  I am having the same issues and have been since I purchased it 3 weeks ago.  The device at random decides to no longer authenticate my wireless devices.  Typically I have to reset the router to have it provide an IP address back to my device (laptop, ps3, cellphone, or wii).

Sure I can get my devices eventually to connect, but it's a 50/50 chance and a pain in the ass for no reason.  If I'm adding a new device, I now expect I will have to reset the router multiple times before I can get it to successfully assign an IP address.

I live in the suburbs and pick up 1-2 external WiFi sources with maybe a bar or two.  The devices that are having issues have 100% signal strength.  I also have all my personal devices in the DCHP Reservation List, but the issue happens w/ new or other wireless devices as well.

FW:1.01NA (First thing I did after having problems was flash it to the latest/greatest)

802.11 Mode (Mixed 802.11n,g,&b)
Wireless Channel (Auto Scan...but tried fixed channels as well and still had the problem)
Security: WPA-Personal
WPA Mode: Auto (WPA or WPA2)
Cipher Type: TKIP (had issues while using AES Only, and TKIP and AES as well)
Group Key: 3600s

Here's a snippet from the logs from this morning of the router choking on itself trying to let my PS3 on the network.  XX:XX is the PS3, YY:YY is my smartphone, and not sure who/what is ZZ:ZZ.  Tech support couldn't have been more worthless, anyone on the forum able to make heads/tails of the logs?

What ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or does it have a built in router by chance?

Does it happen when using Single mode G?
Any cordless phones in the house?
Does this happen if you temp turn off the WPA security?

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled.
For PS3 it's preferred to use a wired connection for gaming.

Let us know how Single mode G works along with using some of the items mentioned.

Furry, appreciate your interest in the thread.

What ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable? Time Warner
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or does it have a built in router by chance? Standalone

Internet access has never been the issue, my two desktops connected to the router work fine.  The issue is soley that the router refuses at times to give my wireless devices an IP address.  Looking at the logs you will see that it will connect and authenticate the device than shortly/immediately deauthenticate it.  That said, I would expect to not get an IP address if the wireless client wasn't authenticated.

Does it happen when using Single mode G? I don't want to use G, my old Linksys WRT54G does G (yes it's turned off, the Dlink is the only router currently running in the house).
Any cordless phones in the house? Yeah, and they're 2.4Ghz, but once again not seeing a lot of other wifi networks and happens when the phones aren't in use, and with the whole Auto Scan it should be selecting the channel
Does this happen if you temp turn off the WPA security? I'm going to say no, because as you see in the logs, it's an authentication failure.  But turning off the security is not a fix for me.

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices. I've added all my personal devies into the DHCP reservation list but don't want to constantly manage new devices/guests.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option. - Have done that, but again not an internet access issue.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled. -Not an issue w/ internet access
For PS3 it's preferred to use a wired connection for gaming. Not worried about latency, XBOX is wired, PS3 is for Netflix and streaming media from PC to Den TV.
Let us know how Single mode G works along with using some of the items mentioned.

All that said, I'll keep you posted.

Here's the portion of the logs where it you can see it failing (thus no IP)
Jul  1 07:25:06 dlinkrouter user.warn kernel: wlan0: A wireless client is associated - XX:XX:8D:3E:6A:72

Jul  1 07:25:39 dlinkrouter user.warn kernel: wlan0: A wireless client is associated - XX:XX:8D:3E:6A:72
Jul  1 07:25:39 dlinkrouter user.warn kernel: wlan0: WPA2-TKIP PSK authentication in progress...
Jul  1 07:25:39 dlinkrouter user.warn kernel: wlan0: A wireless client is associated - XX:XX:8D:3E:6A:72

Jul  1 07:25:39 dlinkrouter user.warn kernel: wlan0: A wireless client is deauthenticated - XX:XX:8D:3E:6A:72

I be somewhat fine to write it off as s***ty PS3 wireless drivers/implemnation, but I have laptops having issues as well, both W7 and WXP, just like poor Arnold the OP posted about.

I would turn OFF ALL cordless and wireless devices accept for one that is having the problem connecting. Test with and with out security on Single mode G for testing.

When your setting security, try WPA and auto cipher then try manual cipher modes. Then try WPA2 in the same manor.

Trying to see if something in security on the router or the device isn't right.

Awesome. This is why I came to the forums: my DIR-651, which is brand new, keeps on dropping Wireless connections, and keeps disconnecting from the internet as well. My desktop is wired to the router. I have appropriate ports forward. If I hop on IRC, every 3 hours I will disconnect/reconnect. Hasn't worked right since day 1.

At first I did manual settings, then I tried using the wizard. Both result in intermittent issues. Yes I have the latest 1.01NA firmware flashed.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Comcast
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router? Stand Alone DOCSIS3.x

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? I guess you mean to just let it be automatic first, then copy the IPs, and then fill them in? I'm using Comcast DNS, no custom DNS or OpenDNS or Google, etc, etc.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option. It's off by default
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. It's on by default
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Done. Doesn't help, and truly defeats the purpose of DHCP. This should be completely optional.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. Why? All but 2 are set up for DHCP. The others are specifying their IPs.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP. Done. No affect.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. Duh
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing. Duh

What wireless modes are you using? Mixed GN
Try single mode G or mixed G and N? No. I need it to be on GN mode. Some devices use N, others use G. This is why I purchased the thing.
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2. WPA2 is preferred, but the wizard sets you up with WPA/WPA2 optional. While I'd love to force WPA2/AES, I have it set for WPA or WPA2

I have no LAN phones in the house. My problem is also with wired connections though.

I set my friend up with a DLink router as well, and he's having similar issues. It seems these are the only ones with problems. I first kept the normal MAC address of the router. I then cloned the MAC address from the PC that I originally set up the internet on. No improvement.

I just want this to work. A router that broadcasts both G and N (2.4GHz, I have no need for 5GHz). A simple plug'n'play with a few tweaks (enabling uPNP, some port forwarding, etc, etc).

Hey orgon3, turn logging on in your router, under the "Status" tab, and  "Log" menu option on the left.  Next time you lose a wireless connection or the internet stops, grab the logs and post them here.  I'll continue to post my logs from when the device goes off into the weeds.

Also see if you can access the cable router logs?

Swap cables between ISP modem and router to test. Preferred is CAT6 or minumum Cat5e.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? I guess you mean to just let it be automatic first, then copy the IPs, and then fill them in? I'm using Comcast DNS, no custom DNS or OpenDNS or Google, etc, etc. NO, copy and paste these addresses into that section.

The reason for setting reserved IPs on the router for all devices is the ease of management, troubleshooting and devices keep there own IP addresses and never changes and not breaking any rules set up for some that are Dymanic and should they change could break the rule that was set up. Also assigning addresses manually on the device could introduce conflicts between the device and router causing problems. There is a reason why reserved IPs is better than DHCP and a misconcept that DHCP would be better. In certain applications yes, Dynamic is good. Experience and Learning of what people don't really understand about IP addressing and there wants and needs of these routers has told me that setting up reserved IP addressing on the router for there devices works best for this platform. This is the function of the router anyways, let the router do its job of IP addresses, not the devices.

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP. Done. No affect.

What wireless modes are you using? Mixed GN
Try single mode G or mixed G and N? No. I need it to be on GN mode. Some devices use N, others use G. This is why I purchased the thing. You need to test Single mode G as a test to see if the problem is exhibiting on this mode. Reason for this is to help see if the problem is global to wireless or to a specific area, mode or band. Yes, at some point you can change back to Mixed G and N. Single mode G needs to be tested as well.
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2. WPA2 is preferred, but the wizard sets you up with WPA/WPA2 optional. While I'd love to force WPA2/AES, I have it set for WPA or WPA2 You can manually do this under Setup/Manual Wireless. Recommend changing the default SSID to something other than dlink.

I always recommend setting up the router manually using the manual settings on the routers web page. The wizards only perform basic set up to get it up and running out of the box.

I have no LAN phones in the house. My problem is also with wired connections though. I was curious if you have any cordless land line phones? I presume this is what you meant?

I set my friend up with a DLink router as well, and he's having similar issues. It seems these are the only ones with problems. I first kept the normal MAC address of the router. I then cloned the MAC address from the PC that I originally set up the internet on. No improvement.

Any other Wifi routers in the near by area?

We can help you out if your interested using teamviewer and you can watch and learn as we can remotely help you set up options on the router. The suggestions presented are suggestions and are in hopes that you would give them a try and report back on the results. We understand the frustrations on dealing with problems however there is some troubleshooting and some time that needs to be taken with some help in the forums to try and figure out and hopefully resolve your problems. And if it can't be resolved here in the forums then we'll recommend getting Dlink involved or finding another resolution. These routers do work and most of the time, problems seen in the forums and other places are end user configuration issues or external interferences for WiFi problems. Thus its possible the reason your friend is exhibiting the same issues.

Please help us help you.

Logs are enabled. While I am losing Wifi connections, the important part here is that I'm losing internet connection on my WIRED connection. Every hour or so it just hiccups.

I did all the manual settings. I set up my DHCP reserved list for this PC and am using DHCP for this PC as well.

Honestly, I don't see how a cable will make the connection hiccup every hour or so, but I'll replace it. I think I have an extra. All my cables are Cat5e (no need for cat6, there is no electrical or magnetic interference where it is).

There are other routers in apartments nearby, but they have a much lower signal strength. Again, while my Wifi does cut off every now and then, my main concern is the WIRED connection losing internet!!! This is just unacceptable!!!

FurryNutz:
As long as I can see what you're doing, I don't mind you doing a remote session. Please private message me with the details. I have a lot of confidential **** on my computer, but I trust you (as long as I can see what you're doing :P).

Again, I've set up tons of routers for people in their homes. The only issues I've had with WIRED and wireless connections are my house and my friend's, both with DLink routers, both brand new.

An update to my problem!

So I've been troubleshooting per FurryNutz's advice. First I switched the patch cable (am currently testing that). I then troubleshooted the wireless.

When I had g/n mixed on, all devices defaulted to g (n needs a whole lot of completely open channels for bonding). I set my phone to connect, and it would connect, but timeout on its DHCP request. I then switched to g only mode, same thing. I then switched to n only mode, and my phone immediately connected (being right next to the router) with an IP address (I had already set up my phone with a DHCP Reservation via the phone's wifi mac address).

So for my wifi, the g is definitely not working. Does this mean I simply have to get another router??

You said that you had other routers near by with low single however no matter the signal, the signal are still there and generating interference and noise.
I'm wondering if you need to check out InSSIDer and see what channels they are using and see if maybe there is a better channel that may not be used by any of the other routers.

However if your seeing a wired problem as well. What I would do is to Turn off WiFi fully for testing and see if your wired exhibits the same issue. If so, then it's possible there is an issue with the ISP modem possibly disconnecting and thus the router is acting like it's the problem however it's doing what it's supposed to, if the router can't get a connection or signal from the ISP modem then it's possible the problem lyes up stream. Some ISP modem have the ability of a web page that gives status and log information. I would check on this and also maybe call up the ISP and talk to a tech and see if they see any issues during these TIMEFRAMEs your seeing the connection issues. Once this can be identified, then you can go from there.

For cable ISP, always make sure that the lines are good and with out any TV splitters if possible or maybe use one GOOD quality splitter. The more splitters on the line will lessen the signal to the ISP modem. Cable modems need a certain level of signal to work well and keep sync with the ISP.

***AN UPDATE***
First off, I'd like to thank FuzzyNuts for taking time out of his day to help me out. He was with me for over an hour. He stuck with me and helped me troubleshoot the s*** out of the router.

My main issue was Hardware NAT. I originally had this enabled, thinking this was enabling the NAT function of the router. FuzzyNuts pointed out to me that it is for hardware acceleration of NAT. Whether it is on or off, NAT is on. Of course, with it off, you need to forward ports or set up QOS on gaming consoles (he did that for me too, and it all worked).

Before leaving, he had me confirm my Xbox 360 connected to live, and showed NAT as being Open (not moderate). He was extremely patient, and he didn't even fap to my **** at all!!! In all seriousness, he was very professional. I was away from the computer a few times, and he didn't try to look at anything on my computer, other than my router settings.

He is VERY trustworthy and you should not be afraid to Team Viewer with him (plus, you can see everything he is doing).

A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ for service!!!!

Glad its working. Enjoy. Member for this router, post in the 660 or 655 forum as it's the closest model to the 651. Not sure why there is a specific forum for each router yet. Hard to tell.

I am having similar issues.

I installed a DIR-651 yesterday and it loses connectivity with the clients every few minutes (it just did). It is better when I have only one computer on, but it still drops every half hour or so. This is a network that has been running without any problems for years with a Linksys WRT54G router.

I have tried most of the things mentioned above and it still does it. One thing I haven't tried is updating the firmware. I have 1.00. The notes on 1.01 say that it changes some of the defaults- does it do anything else (like fix this problem)?
