Copying music from DNS-323 to iPhone 3G?
« on: January 25, 2009, 09:55:00 AM »

I've got my DNS-323 connected to my iTunes. It's listed under the SHARED directory. However, I'm trying to leave the music on the DNS-323 and sync it to my iPhone 3G without having to copy the music locally. Is this possible?

Thanks

yes, it's possible not to have the files copied to your local computer.
Of course, it has to be copied locally into your iphone in order for you to play it in your iphone.

connect to the itunes server on dns323 using ur itunes (shared folder).

drag and drop the music files that you want from the <dns_323_server_name> to your iphone

Well I don't think the last Post will work because of copy right laws

But what i do is I store my itunes music right on my NAS Told itunes where it is and I sync all the time

Some things like firmware updates and stuff will be on you computer locally
if you already have your content store on your computer then Follow these steps to move the Itunes music library over to your nas so you keep your playlist and Play count and stuff

For Windows
make sure your connected to the Network _Ethernet is best for this issue
Open itunes (8)
Click edit
Then pref's
Then click on the Advanced tab (the gear)
Then where it says iTunes music folder Location click change
-Now what i find best is not going through a mapped Drive
-just browser for it through your network places
-Once you find the spot where you want to store you music i,e  //Nas//Volume_1/Media/Music/
-Click on the music folder
Then click open
-Also make sure that Keep my itunes music folder organized is checked and also check off Copy files into my itunes music folder
-Close out of all that
Now the fun part once that part is all done
-Click File
-Then Library/-Then click Consolidate library then once you get that Pop up click Consolidate
-This can't be stopped once it starts and it will move your entire Music folder over to your nas

it's pretty music the same steps for mac the only differences is to open pref's just click itunes in the menu Bar

Hope this helps!

Hmm, I'm not sure if this is exactly the solution I was looking for. I simply want to leave my entire music collection on my DNS-323, and be able to sinc those songs with my iPhone. However, it won't allow me to select the DNS-323 folder from the iPhone sync setup pages.

Any other solutions?

When you go to import music to your iPhone from iTunes you are not able to see the music on the DNS-323 iTunes server? Or are you trying to play music on your iPhone that is stored on the DNS-323 iTunes server  not importing to your iPhone?

No, I'd like to import them onto the iPhone. I cannot see the DNS-323 in the sync folder when I try to do this with the iPhone connected to the computer.

It doesn't look like it is possible in iTunes with shared music you need to actually import the tracks to the iTunes database to move the tracks to the iPhone.

Not sure what you mean by "sync" folder. But, if I am not mistaken, the items under the "Music" tab are "playlist" not "folder".
You can try creating a playlist and then drag all the songs from your SHARED (i.e. songs in your iTune Server on DNS323). And then check off this playlist under the Music tab. I never done this b4, but you can try.

ECF - I don't think I can do it either, w/out transferring to local HDD. I can't seem to copy the files from the shared playlist either. I think I'll have to copy them locally to my iTunes folder... Which is unfortunate and a pain. Sure wish there was a way to keep them on the DNS-323 and sync certain playlists with that.

oMac - I tried the suggested. As mentioned to ECF, I can't copy, or drag and drop files from the shared playlist within iTunes.

If anyone else has any other suggestions or solutions I'm all ears.eyes.

Thanks for the quick responses though...

That's right you can't sync the Shared music to your iPhone It's cuz of Copyright Laws

I know my buddy who is in a dorm at school when he opens up iTunes he sees about 10 of them

The only way to you can sync the music to your iphone and leave it on the 323 is by following my steps i posted above

Enjoy

Just in case anyone else is curious to know about this topic I found the following...

If your computer is connected to other computers in your home or office using a wired or wireless network, you can share your iTunes library with up to five of those computers. iTunes can also look for shared libraries on your network and display them in iTunes.

You can listen to a shared song or watch a shared video, but you can't add it to your library, playlists, or iPod, or burn it to a CD. You can also share audiobooks purchased from the iTunes Store, but you can't share Audible spoken programs downloaded from Audible.com or QuickTime sound files.

To share music or video you purchased from the iTunes Store, you must authorize the computer to play the purchases; you can authorize up to five computers at a time.

You can also share a playlist with friends by publishing it as an iMix on the iTunes Store. Store visitors can see the songs in your iMix and listen to a preview of any song available on the iTunes Store.

Sharing is intended for personal use only, and is possible only with computers in the same network subnet.

For instructions on sharing music or publishing playlists, search help for "sharing" or "publishing."

Yeah, that's also what I was thinking I was going to do. It just takes a long time to add all of the album artwork and such. Probably will resort to that though. Thanks
