Could connect via wireless but no internet connection
« on: June 28, 2011, 07:24:56 PM »

Hi,

I bought this router a couple of months ago and it was working fine until this morning. I tried to use the internet and there was no connection at all (wired or wireless). I tried power cycling but that didn't help. I finally decided to call my DSL provider and we changed the setup from the router connecting to PPPOE to the modem connecting to PPPOE. Now, my two computers (wired) can access the internet but all my wireless devices (Androidd and BB) connect to the SSID (unique) but can't actually access the net.

I called DLink but they decided to stop helping me once I told them that my computers could connect but not the wireless devices. They said I need to call the manufacturers of my wirelesss devices - I really doubt that all 4 of my wireless devices are faulty.

I find that this is a extremely weird issue. I created a whole new SSID (not broadcasting) and it still didn't work. Does anyone have any advise?

Thanks,
Tony

Okay, some developments..

I have two desktops - they are both static IP. I set one of them to automatic and the only one that works is the desktop with the static IP. It looks like whatever is using the DHCP is not working properly.

Hi Tony,

Before touching the Router and suspect its guilty, when you have no Internet connection, always disconnect the Router from the Wired Computer and plug the Modem directly into the Computer and see if you have the Internet Back. that way, first.

Now, simply do a Factory Reset and reenter all settings manually, unless you backed up the settings, when they were working.

Hi thecreator,

Thanks for your reply. The way I had my router and modem configured was not ideal because I couldn't just connect the PC directly to the modem without first making modifications. Originally, the modem was acting as a bridge so I had to change it to connect PPPOE. Once that was done, I had to remove the static IP on my computer.

Anyway, It finally started to work after an hour. I tried setting the router up as a Static IP from Dynamic and then went back to Dynamic and now it works. I guess the router re-initialized itself finally and all is good.

Thanks again,
Tony

One thing I just discovered which I'm sure is related to this issue, is that I can't access my computer (via RDP) from any external system. I Port Forwarded 3389 to my static IP of 192.168.1.75 and when I type in my external static IP (from TekSavvy), I can't connect anymore.

I was able to RDP in before I switched my modem from bridge to PPPOE. Does this cause issues with port forwarding? Is there something I'm just forgetting to do?

Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony,

What is RDP?

192.168.1.75?

How is your DHCP IP Address Range set up?

I believe that a majority of everyone problems is that they are lazy and believe if it worked on one Router, before it died, it should work on the other Router as well.

192.168.1.75 is not in the Default DHCP IP Address range of the D-Link DIR-655 Router.

Hi Tony,

What is RDP?
Remote Desktop Protocol. I often remote desktop into my desktop computer from an external computer.

192.168.1.75?
Static IP address of my desktop computer.

How is your DHCP IP Address Range set up?
From 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150

I believe that a majority of everyone problems is that they are lazy and believe if it worked on one Router, before it died, it should work on the other Router as well.
No, this is not the case for me! :) It's the same router as before I changed the router from making the PPPOE connection - now my modem makes the connection. Ever since this change, it seems that port forwarding is not working.

192.168.1.75 is not in the Default DHCP IP Address range of the D-Link DIR-655 Router.
I didn't like 192.168.0.1 so I changed it to 192.168.1.1. This was done from day one and the router worked fine until that one wacky day (my original post).

Thanks,
Tony

hat ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Since the DSL modem is doing the actual connection now, I believe you need to set up the port forwards on that too.  Just guessing though as I don't use DSL.

I have a Thomson Speedtouch 516 and I'm using DSL.
The desktop computer is wired so wireless settings are not relevant.
All firewalls/AV are disabled.

Anyway, I will call TekSavvy when I get home this evening. They should be able to figure it out. If not, I will revert back to the Dlink making the PPPOE connection.

Thanks for your comments.

If the DSL Modem has a built in router, it's preferred to bridge the modem and have the 655 make the PPPoE connection as having 2 routers on the same line can cause NAT and connection problems.
