I just purchased a 323 and did set it up on my Mac and I can see the drive in Finder.  I am not sure if it was set up properly as i had to wing the set up.  Can someone direct me to step-by-step directions for setting up my 323 usinf Snow Leopard.

I will use the 323 for media storage and streaming to a popcorn hour.  If anyone has any tips for the set up to allow me to do this, that would be great.  Dio I need to set up an SMB or something?

Thanks.  I had seen that and its a bit too technical for me.

I looking for instructions for initial set up after inserting a new HDD into the 323 and plugging it in.

When you say you "set it up on my Mac", does that mean you ran the Easy Setup Utility?  If not, use your favorite browser and connect to the device and run the Setup Wizard, instructions are in the User's Guide.

When you format the disks, I would select EXT3 format.

If your Mac can see the device you are well down the road for setting it up.  Unfortunately, I can not tell you how to find the IP address of the DNS-323 using standard OS X.

When you get to the point of wanting to backup your MAC to the DNS-323, look at SuperDuper! first.

I did do all that, but was unsure if it was correct.  I figured I would need to format for a mac.

It should "just work". But you can explicitly show the drive via Finder by choosing its Go menu and selecting "Connect to Server...".  Assuming you know the network name of the drive (for example "drive-name"), you can enter smb://drive-name. If you do not know the name, you can also use its IP address, e.g., smb://192.168.1.4).

OS X does relatively well with SMB on the DNS-323.  I understand the transfer rate is better with NFS, but that was not a concern of mine.

Before you start moving all your files to the 323, you may want to consider how you are going to backup the files.  If you look at the posts on this list you can find many opinions.  Based on comments by more experienced users, I changed to having the two disks formatted as two separate disks.  It is best to make that decision before you load all your data.

I actually have a second 323, which I will set up afteer this one.  I'll use that to back up the first.

How does one set up SMB?  Is this done by "connect to server" in "Go" from Finder?  I'll need to know this when I direct my PCH to the 323.

if you are not quite sure what you are supposed to do, please consider the following:
there are no straightforward procedures given to undo the stuff described in this wiki. it is important because some tricks work at once and some do not. some need just minor tinkering, some may make you tear your hair out, grow it back and then tear it out again (good example of this is the 'poor man's time machine' hack. my advice: don't bother).
restoring factory defaults does not help a bit if you have invaded too deep into your dns-323's inner workings.
the same goes for firmware reflashing/updating and drives formatting.

best help you can get is from a friend who has extensive linux experience. to get help here you need to be well articulated describing your problems. people here are nice and willing to help if they can.

overall, if you do not enjoy fixing things you have broken yourself, i would recommend installing better media server (i'm really happy with twonky), transmission torrent client and leaving the rest be.
