Win 7 login conflict?
« on: July 11, 2011, 03:37:18 PM »

I think I read somewhere that if you have the administration account named "admin" or "administrator" on your Win7  PC that it will cause troubles with your DNS 320. Is this true?

I'm having problems getting some small office backups set up properly... it seems very messy and I have a big problem with permissions. Sometimes I will try to access a file from a user account and discover it has full access... other times I can't get any access. It just seems random.

This is just for backups only and I'm wondering if perhaps it might be better to simply use aes encryption on the backup files and forget the folder permissions entirely? Using EASEUS backup, individually from 3 or 4 machines.

Any thoughts would be appreciated and  if anyone has a link for me regarding how this Win 7 log in thing works I would be grateful.

I may have resolved this by creating a user on the NAS that is identical to the Win7 user, with the same password. Is this the right way to handle it?

That resovled it partly...
I would loose access as soon as I fired up Easeus Todo Backup... suddenly I would no longer have access to the folder. So I have uninstalled it.  :P Win 7 backup will probably work just as well, since this is Professional version on all machines. Pro version allows backup over network.

Further resolution.

I have done several things and now have fully functioning backups that are user-specific with adequate security.

1. Eliminated the user name "Admin" and "Administrator" from all machines. Administrator accounts now have different names and different full names. Each machine now has a unique administrator name.

2. Eliminated the volume_1 share from  the NAS and established a share for each computer.

3. Created a user on the NAS for each Win 7 admin account. You must name it with the exact name of the account and use the exact same password.

4. Since this is Win 7 Professional, backup can be done from the Win 7 backup utility directly. This is actually quite functional and backs up all users from the admin account. Works quite well.

Easeus Todo backup will not work with Win 7 and this NAS, at least in the current form.

I hope this helps others struggling with this.
