DIR-655 VPN Error 720
« on: July 16, 2011, 12:38:34 PM »

I have seemingly tried everything!  I am still getting vpn error 720 using windows client trying to connect to vpn server using PPTP.  I am about to go out an buy another WNR200 because vpn works flawlessly on that router.  I have 2 virtual servers set up, one for port 1723, the other for port 47(GRE).  All the ALG check boxes are checked(I have tried them both ways, when they are un checked and I use port forwarding i get vpn error 800).  I have tried with SPI enabled and disabled.  No port forwarding set up for vpn just the virtual servers.  Firmware is 1.34NA,  2010/04/16.

Any ideas?

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled.
Try setting Firewall NAT to Endpoint Independent for both TCP and UDP.

I should say, the vpn server I am trying to connect to is a computer in my house behind the DIR-655.  I tried everything you stated above except "Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual."  I am not sure what you are asking there.  The last time I got this to work was using dd-wrt firmware on a netgear router.

Sometimes Primary and 2ndary DNS are not filled in, it's recommended to fill them in with ISP DNS addresses that you can find under Status/Device Info/Wan section.

Thanks for your help, but I just set up three different routers.  All are giving me the error 720.  Even my old router that worked at one point.  I am thinking it may be something besides the router.

Possibly if you seeing this on other routers. Check your SW that your using? Any 3rd party firewall SW installed?

What is your ISP? Cable or DSL?
What is your ISP modem? stand alone or built in router?

im using windows built in vpn software for server(xp pro) and clients(win 7 pro).

no third party firewall....

cable modem with no router built in just modem only and dir-655

vpn 720 error is sometimes fixed by reinstalling tcpip, but i have tried almost every fix on the web.  I still dont really know for sure if it is on the server or client.

I also tried another computer on the network.  I set a win 7 pro machine up as a vpn server, and tried it from a different client and got vpn error 720 also, so I thought it was the router.

I have bought another computer and replaced my previous vpn server.  Brand new computer, multiple clients.  Still error 720.  So, I am back to thinking it may be the router.  It is the only piece of hardware left.  I'm stumped.  Im gonna have to call the geek squad I guess. ;D

Keep us posted on this...see if a different model router does the same thing too to test.
