Booting up issues / now no access to the share anymore
« on: July 18, 2011, 10:13:26 AM »

Hi,

i'm running the DNS-323 with the latest firmware in Raid1 (Mirror) and 2 2TB Western Digital Green Hard Disks.
Today when powering up (I always shut it down in the evening because it takes costant 16W!) it did boot for a really long time (blinking lights for more than 10 minutes) and after that the main button is not lit in full brightness. the two HD lights and the network light are constant an fully lit.

when I'm logging in via the web interface it directs me to the Hard drive confuguration, saying
Quote
Click 'Next' to begin formatting the replacement drive. Re-synch will take place after the restart.

Did one of my drives crash physically? I did only run them for three months... that would not be a very good statistic.

Thanks,
Hundert

Did you try to access the drives?  Did you look at the status page - what does it say?

The status - based on the LED indications you describe - power button dim, disk & network LEDs on - is a unit that is in standby.

The unit taking longer than normal to boot is not necessarily a problem - it could have been running a disk scan or resynchronising the drives.

Hi,

sorry forgot to mention: No I can't access the drives via the filebrowser. That's in fact the main problem :)

I just loaded the status page (did not see the skip button on the Drive Configuration coming up when logging in first) and it says nothing special, no error messages and both disks appearing.

But there's something in the Log:

2011/07/17   08:58:18   System Time changes to "2011/07/17 08:58:18"
2011/07/17   08:58:33   System up.
2011/07/17   22:05:32   HDD1 Hard Drive Has Removed.
2011/07/17   23:01:23   System shutdown.
2011/07/18   07:54:22   HDD2 Hard Drive Has Removed
2011/07/18   07:54:28   HDD1 Hard Drive Has Removed
2011/07/18   07:54:34   System up.
2011/07/18   07:54:49   System shutdown.
2011/07/18   08:29:47   HDD1 Hard Drive Has Failed
2011/07/18   08:29:53   System up.
2011/07/18   08:39:27   System shutdown.
2011/07/18   09:12:38   HDD1 Hard Drive Has Failed
2011/07/18   09:12:45   System up.
2011/07/18   18:00:51   admin login.

-> I was removing the hard drives this morning after the boot took so long. Read this in another thread which was about no booting up at all. But put them back in. But HDD1 Hard Drive Has Failed doesn't sound so good...

At this point, it's going to be quite difficult to figure out which of those messages is cause and which is effect - although I do note that the first "HDD1 Hard Drive Has Removed" message is time stamped 22:05 on 07/17 about an hour before the system was shutdown, suggesting that that drive may have failed.

Did you have a backup of the data?

It's a Raid1, isn't it supposed to mirror the data autoamtically?
As mentioned, I removed the Hard Disks manually for a test-boot without disks. So the log is a bit chaotic with lots of power ons and power offs.

I guess the three last lines are saying it:
2011/07/18   09:12:38   HDD1 Hard Drive Has Failed
2011/07/18   09:12:45   System up.
2011/07/18   18:00:51   admin login. (<- that was while checking the status page)

So I guess I need a new harddrive, exactly the same model as the old one, right?
Is it possible to take the working hard drive out to backup the data manually (by plugging it in via a USB adapter) before continuing the replacement process?

thanks for your help :)

That chaos is what I was referring to when I said it's going to be difficult - the HDD1 failed message you have singled out could be the result of your removing the disks, the message I drew your attention to was supposedly before you started pulling disks.

What you need to do now is test each drive to determine if one has indeed failed, and then move forward - if you do need a replacement, it does not have to be an identical drive, just one that is the same size, or larger.

Yes - it is normally possible to connect a drive removed from the DNS-323 to a computer and remove the data using either linux or windows with a file system driver.  It is also normally possible to access data from the remaining drive in a failed RAID1 array, and to simply replace the failed drive and have the DNS-323 rebuild the array.  Those may no longer be viable options in your situation.

well, I figured some things out, but have another problem now. that's what I did:

* removed the hard drive which led to the errors
* booted the nas
* copied all files to an external hard drive, just to be sure that nothing goes wrong when recreating the raid (that's what took me so long to reply ;))
* inserted a new, second hard drive
* recreated the raid1
* no errors or anything obviously unusual

-> so for part one I would say that one hard drive crashed and for whatever reasons the LED did not turn amber. but the status log diagnosed it sucessfully, as i can now boot up quickly wihtout the hard drive error

but, as mentioned there's a new issue:
I can not login to my share anymore. I can sucessfully connect to 192.168.x.x and see the "Volume_1", "web_page" and "lp" icons, but can not go to Volume 1.

I tried it on two computers, it worked on both before:
1. Win7 Professional 64 Bit. Here I do not get an error message because I am using Offline Files. So I just see my synced Folders and the "Volume_1" folder and everything inside  is marked as offline. Same behaviour with attached network drives
2. Win XP Professional 32 Bit.
Error message when clicking on the "Volume_1" folder by manually connecting to the IP via explorer:
"192.168.x.x is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network ressource"

Error message when trying to go there via a mapped network drive:
"An Error occoured while reconnecting... An unexpected network error occured. This conenction has not been restored"

Things I tried on both computers
* check if usernames/pwd are still correct in the configuration
* reconnect network drives
* check username/password combinations in credential manager (Win 7)

Any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks in advance,
philipp

I did another "test".
When I run the "Easy Search Utility" it sucessfully detects the Network Storage Device with correct IP etc.
But when I try mapping it as a network drive I get the error "Failed to map drive".

So I still have no clue how to get access to the data again...

A hard reset did the trick.
