DNS-320 & 3TB & 2.01 Beta - Anyone have this working?
« on: July 29, 2011, 08:34:47 AM »

Does anyone have the DNS-320 with 3TB drives (2 x 3TB = 6TB) and the Beta 2.01 software?

If so what drives are you using?

Does anyone know what drives they are supporting?

When / How long does it take for Beta updates to become real upates.

Thanks in advanced.

I can answer one of your questions. There is no fixed schedule / turnaround time (that I'm privy to) for beta firmware to convert to public releases. I've seen firmware go from beta to public release in as little as a few weeks to upwards of many many months. From my experience, beta releases for the DNS series are quite stable and are not made available until they go through substantial internal testing by D-Link. Although the beta firmware will likely have some issues, I have yet to personally see a beta firmware release for the DNS series with serious data-threatening problems.

I have this working as 2TB in RAID 1 and 2TB in JBOD with Hitachi 5k3000 3tb deskstars.  Does not work as full 3TB in RAID 1 however only shows us as 699GB.

Did you upgrade to FW v2.01b prior to formatting the drives?

Update-Ok I have reset and reformatted these drives after the 2.01 upgrade. It does not work on drives over 2TB, Any kind of format around the 2199GB range is ok. Windoz see's it ok. Anything over that and only the D-link ShareCenter see's it. Although the "Percent Usage" is still not configured correctly. "Percent Usage vs Available Space Remaining"???
I can see I'm not going to be able to depend on this box for my important file storage.  :'(

DNS-320 Flashed from 2.0 to 2.01
Fixed 3TB drive ID only for "ShareCenter"
Storage Status, see's the drive size, although reports
availible percentage wrong.
Also still doesn't report the correct size to Windoze.
Keep trying guy's you'll get there.

Slot Manufacturer Model Serial Number Temp Size Status Temp
Right Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630 MJ1313YNG18LNC 36°C / 96°F 3000 GB  36
Left Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630 MJ1313YNG23DRC 36°C / 96°F 3000 GB

Thanks, Yes they will format in the full size after the 2.01 upgrade. They just don't show the correct size in window's. I picked these Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630, as I knew from D-Link's web page that the 2TB models worked. I just figured (and have) I got a really great deal on the 3TB and could use them as 2TB. Maybe oneday D-Link will support these drives. So for now as of last night I just did a Raid-1 2TB. Talk to you later. And THANKS!

If I am reading this correctly, the DNS-320 is reporting the correct size (3TB), but Windows explorer indicates the HDDs are 2TB. Did you try adding over 2TB of data? What I'm driving at here is whether you sure the remaining 1TB is not available for storage.

I'm not saying the space is definitely available, just saying that it's one more thing to check. I don't want to send you on a wild goose chase.

Could this be a limitation with samba?

Don't think so. Had the same issue with a TViX 4100 mounting via samba or nfs.

Leaning towards some kind of issue with 32-bit clients, but haven't tested this.
Kinda gave up after having success with one 2199GB mirrored partition + the rest as jbod...

dont use firmware 2.01, it has more problems than firmware 2.0

Iam not trying to be rude, but its true.

If you upgrade to firmware 2.01, you will be unable to modify user accounts with the modify button.

You will be able to create new users, but it will get hung up on the quota screen if you use the modify button.

Out of curiosity, have you successfully used the latest beta on a pre-Windows 7 OS?

Hi all,
I tried 2 3TB Hitachi drives the other day.  Upgraded to 2.01 before installing raw drives.  The blue lights came on and blinked for quite a while but basically they are nonfunctional.  Interestingly, you can see under Disk Management, but only to run the Smart Test which they passed.  The "Hard Drive Configuration" tab is nonfunctional.  Under "System Status", the "Hard Drive Info" is reported correctly and both drives show with the correct capacity and are "checked".  But every place else, it reports "None Disks".
I pulled the drives and formatted them under a W7 64bit machine and the drives appear to be totally functional but after reinstalling in the 320, exactly the same results.  Disappointing to say the least.
I am puzzled by the gent who reported being able to get the 320 to apparently partition the drives and get a 2TB raid 1, and the balance of the drive space as JBOD.  If they would provide a bit more information regarding their procedure, I would really love to hear it.

UPDATE: I did reset to factory specs, and down graded to 2.0.  I was now able to select the drives under "Hard Drive Configuration" and went with Raid 1, the max setting 29xx and left the small balance open and left it finish setting up.  I then upgraded again to 2.01 and have started copying real data, but unfortunately, this thing will take about 48 hours to get near to "filling" it up as I only get about 20MB transfers.  The storage status window showed nothing and then reported 785 GB capacity when I started transferring data.  The % is off too.  I will follow with any significant info.

UPDATE: What shows as the available space 785GB in Raid 1 is what you get, roughly double that if you try to use JBOD.  The conclusion, forget about 3TB drives with 2.01, and at this point, I guess I should be glad that they work with the 2TB drives and at least the network shares is workable for streaming, most everything else is non-functional, hit or miss, or insecure.  I wish I have figured all this out before my 30 day return was up.
