PS3 downloads are really slow
« on: July 30, 2011, 10:16:34 PM »

I ran a speed test with my new DIR-655 connected to my PS3 and my download is 768kbps and my upload is 1.5mbps.  However, my internet connection is 50mbps and 2mbps upload on my computer connected via LAN.  While I understand SOME decrease, that's slower than the previous Wireless G router that I had.

I've reset the router twice and it's currently set to the factory defaults.  I've even tried setting a static ip address for the PS3 and put it into DMZ mode.  However, I'm still getting the slow speeds.

Also, my iPhone 4 is getting about 14mbps download and 2mbps upload.  Is that expected?

If possible try hooking it up with an ethernet cable to test it out. I never had good luck using my ps3 on wireless, streaming 1080p video tends to lag on wireless, and many dropouts in games.

Hi,

First test is to run an ethernet cable from you 655 to the PS3...see if using a wired link changes things....

I use a TrendNet wireless Gaming adapter for my XBox360 and it works really well....the unit is more of a wireless bridge and then you plug the ethernet cable from the XBox into it....  They have a newer version that has like 4 ethernet ports instead of the one port my unit has....  Got mine on Newegg.com

You might also explore tweaking some of the wireless settings like Wireless Partitions...see if that impacts your situation....

Thanks for the advice.  Yeah, I got better downloads with the direct connection, but not too great.  For some weird reason, the router keeps capping my download speeds on my tower computer to 9mbps.  As a quick test, I hooked up my old wireless G router & did a speed test on my PS3.  I got 4 times the speed out of the old router than my new DIR-655.  Overall, I'm really disappointed in this router considering all of the good reviews.  I've spent countless hours reading forum posts and tweaking the settings.  I think I'm just going to sell this thing on eBay and call it "stupid tax."

Check out the DGL-4500 forum, there is stickies there for PS and XBL and getting them setup.
Recommend wired connections for game consoles however try using Single mode G or N to test each mode out.
