DIR-655 worked for several years, now just doesn't
« on: July 31, 2011, 05:55:25 PM »

My router has worked fine, but now does not.  My ISP said that my router was returning a bad IP address.  I can connect to the Internet fine with just the modem.
ISP: Qwest DSL 12Mbs
Wired connection
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

I tried re-running the D-Link router setup software, and everything goes fine until I get to the final internet connectivity test.  It can't connect.  I also upgraded my firmware to version 1.35NA.  When I run the Windows 7 diagnostics, it says that it cannot connect to the DNS server.  Can routers just "go bad"?

Please let me know if you need additional information.

Well, all the lights still light up.  So it's not an issue of it outright "dying", I'm just wondering if there are things I can try before buying a new router.

The LEDs are "mis-leading" you.  They only tell you that the "ports" and wireless radio can be working.  The LAN / WAN Ethernet ports can be defective.  The internal components can "fry" with power surges without any tell-tale "outward" "indications."

You can attempt to do a factory reset and try to re-program.

BTW:  Several "years" of "faithful" service is the "average" life span of most routers.

Gotcha, thanks.  I guess that was my real question, how long routers are expected to last.  I will look for a new router.

Note the "price" range of the routers.  I do believe that any router below $400 (low-end price for most "business grade units) can be considered to have a life-span of 1-2 years with a 3rd year "pushing" the limit.

Any "electronic" componet life span is subject to the "environement."   Consider a "light bulb?"  It can last "years" or 5 secords.

Is the DSL modem running as the main modem or is it in bridged mode? it's preferred to bridged the modem and use the 655 router features after you enter in the PPPoE information.
