Xbox 360 Wireless N Adapter Won't use N mode.
« on: August 03, 2011, 07:50:54 PM »

No matter what I try, I cannot get the DIR-655 to connect to my Xbox 360 Wireless N Adapter with N, only connects with G. If I use N only mode, it won't connect at all, even if I manually input the settings. Setting the security to WPA2 Only and setting the Cipher Type to AES doesn't work.

Hardware Version : A3
Firmware Version : 1.35NA
802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n and 802.11g
Enable Auto Channel Scan : Checked
Transmission Rate : Best (automatic)
Channel Width : Auto 20/40
Visibility Status : Visible

Security Mode : WPA-Personal
WPA Mode : Auto (WPA or WPA2)
Cipher Type : TKOP and AES

Have you tried setting Single Mode N on the 655 router?

Yes I have. The Xbox won't connect at all when I do that.

Do you have a new xbox Slim or the 1st gen xbox with a wireless adapter? I have heard of some xbox slims having some wireless connection issues on N.

I presume it's the older generation xbox elite then with the USB wireless adapter that you plug in?

What happens if you set WiFi mode for Single N only mode? Will it connect?

Do other devices connect with using Single Mode N?

I've heard that some xbox WiFi adapters don't work well out of the box.
I would test the adapter at a friends house with other WiFi to see if your adapter works else where or take it back and get another adapter.

I "Think" you MUST have the router Cipher type set to ONLY use AES in order to get .11N speeds.

Something about TKIP interferes with .11N  but don't ask me why that is....  I am only going by my own experiences here setting up my 655 to achieve .11N speeds.

If other devices are connecting in Single mode N and the xbox adapter isn't, then I would presume that this device is defective.

Yeah, It probably is. But, do you know any third party adapters that would work using Wireless N?
Thanks for the help btw!

Not sure if there are any 3rd party WiFi adapters for Xbox as MS likes to keep that system pretty closed off to 3rd party anything.  >:(

I have the xbox N adapter that I bought at Best Best last year and it worked great on a WNDR3700 set up or AP connected to a DIR-628 using DSL. I was at my families place for the holidays and took my xbox with me. I didn't know if the 628 would work well for gaming so I took my spare 3700 and set it up for AP and N mode only. Gaming was pretty good.

I would try another adapter if your really want to game over WiFi. I recommend wired though.  ;)
