Im close to getting the NAS going for the first time. Ive been looking over this model in particular over the last month or two, but i have a few concerns.

1. A reviewer reported Hot operating temps. Is this the case? or a one time thing?

2. Size Limit - I noticed the Synology DS211J (for example) has a 6TB limit, where this one only has a 4TB. Now while right at this time, i don't see myself Hitting that limit, i would like to keep this for as long as possible, which means eventually upgrading the drivers in the future. Is this limit coming from the hardware and not changeable? or Is this something that can later be upgraded via firmware?

3. Some have complained about a lack of information. Will someone like me, whos never setup a NAS before (but has networking and tech experience) have any issues setting this up? (note that ive never worked with RAID settings before)

4. What is the performace of this? Some reviews of the Synology DS211J state some slow transfer speeds, but the few reviews for the D-link say its quick (about 35MB/s write). Is that quick for a NAS? Even on a Gigiabit network?

Addressing your questions:

1. There is not a heat issue endemic to the DNS-325

2. The latest firmware update for the DNS-325 has 3TB HDD support, raising the ceiling to 6TB

3. That's something you'll have to judge on your own.

4. Can't speak to performance on this model.

I guess im just trying to figure out why this model, having not been out for too long, suddenly droped in price, and why an older model from a different company, still costs more, but appears to do the same thing.  *shrug*

Any isses with the device i should be aware about?

As far as reported issues, I suggest you simply read through this forum to get a feel for how the device is received by the user community. Additionally, you may want to read online reviews external to this site.

I wouldn't put too much weight on company "X" maintaining their price, while D-Link lowers their pricing. Price drops could indicate a newer model forthcoming; a short-term sale to increase gross revenue or increase consumer interest;  reduced component/manufacturing costs; changes in international trade import/taxes; or a variety of other things.

D-Link is continuously developing new products, so there's no telling what's coming up in terms of new product releases.

Problem is, since this device hasnt been out that long, there are not alot of reviews on it. Newegg itself only has 4. Ive been watching what few youtube vid's there are on it, but they are basically just showing off the unit.

Understood. I don't like being the guinea pig either. Also keep in mind that these products typically only have a shelf-life of 2-4 years or so before newer models come out, and they build on prior models.

There are other brands that perform much greater burn-in testing prior to release than D-Link. There are also others that perform far less. It's just a matter of how much extra money you're willing to pay for that peace of mind.
