DNS-323 upgrade from firmware version 1.07 to 1.09
« on: August 05, 2011, 09:37:43 PM »

The firmware upgrade information includes warnings about backing up your drive(s) before doing an upgrade.

But it also lists specific problems related to upgrading from very early versions that were on the devices as shipped, and if the drives were formatted as EXT3.

Since the drives are actually used for my backups, I don't really have enough space elsewhere to make copies of everything that is on them.

Is there any other way to safely do the upgrade?  Like maybe do it with the drives unplugged and thenplug them back in after the upgrade?

Thanks...........

Is there some specific reason you want to change the firmware.  The only real reason to upgrade is if the upgrade adds some feature that you need, otherwise 'if it isn't broke why fix it' applies.

If the NAS is your only backup then you really should consider what would happen if something went down - like one of the disks going bad, and how you would recover your data.

Generally bad things don't happen when doing an upgrade of the firmware but there is always the chance it might.  Depending on the amount of data you have on the NAS it should be possible to copy it to a USB mounted drive of sufficient capacity so giving yourself security and a backup.

Thanks for response,

I'll wait then to see if a problem that I posted elsewhere might be helped by the upgrade.   I doubt it, but it might have an effect.

Thanks again...................

There is no "real" risk of data loss during the 1.07 to 1.09 upgrade - but - as with any upgrade, things can go "bump" causing the data to become inaccessible, if it's your only copy of the data I would strongly suggest a backup, if it's a backup of your data then you have the data available elsewhere should things go awry, so I wouldn't be too concerned.

Mind you - it is possible to have two things go wrong simultaneously, so there is some risk of data loss - and if it's any consolation, I use my DNS-323 as my backup, and I have not had any issues with data loss using it as such - I have not had any disk failures with my primary storage, I have had a disk fail in the DNS-323, and to be fair, the disks in it were not new when they were installed.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

OK, I guess my best bet for now is to skip it.

I'm getting other info about how to get the Lexmark printer going without it, and I'll give that a try later.

Thanks....
