Can't view sites through DSL
« on: August 08, 2011, 07:15:20 AM »

Hi. I’m looking for help with my internet connection.
I have just started using D-Link 655 router and ATT DSL connection at home. There is an internet signal. Skype is working. But I can’t open any sites. I’ve tried typing hotmail, Google, anything - sites do not open. I’ve tried to plug in the Ethernet cable directly into my laptop and I get the same result – sites don’t open.
Please help me understand what settings do I need to change to be able to view sites!
Thanks a lot!

Hi Tat_Mc,

If you have just started using the D-Link Router, it would still be under warranty. I would call D-Link Support and ask them for help.

You really need to look at the Question, before you submit the question, to ask yourself, if you need other information.

I've been using the router for a few years. It used to be set up through my cable provider. Worked fine. then I moved and used another wireless network through another cable provider - worked fine.
Then I moved again - current place has DSL internet. I connected my router to the DSL modem. Looks like there is a signal (as I have skype), I just can't open any sites.

I'm not computer savvy at all, so I would appreciate simple advice.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Tat_Mc,

Please reply with the D-Link Hardware Rev and Firmware Version. Also need the Manufacture and Model Number of the DSL Modem. Does it have a Router as part of the DSL Modem?

Have you turned off the power to both the DSL Modem and Router and plugged it back in after they were connected together?

Sorry for the silly question, but how do I get all these: D-Link Hardware Rev and Firmware Version?
Will find out about the modem.

And yes, i have tried to turn off the power.

You can find the HW version of the router on the sticker under the router.
You can find the FW version on the routers web page, Status.

It's recommended that you bridge the DSL modem if it has a built in router itself.
One way you can see this is to take a look at the Status/Device Info/Wan section on the router page. If you see the WAN ip address start with 2 digit numbers then your getting a public IP address which is preferred. If your seeing 192.168 numbers in the WAN IP address then the DSL Modem should be bridged.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Update. I went to my router ip address and it turned out that DNS server was set to zero. So i set 208.67.222.222 in the Primary DNS Server box, and 208.67.220.220 in the Secondary DNS Server box. Now it works!

Someone gave me this advice. I don’t know if these DNS servers are good or bad, but it works now.

FurryNutz, I'll check all those things for my own educational purposes.

Thanks!

I recommend using ISP DNS at first and you find find these by calling up your ISP and asking them for proper and correct DNS addresses and you can look under the routers web page to see what it's getting form the ISP modem under Status/Device Info/Wan section if your not sure about what DNS addresses to use. Glad you go it working though.
