DIR 655 Password problems
« on: August 08, 2011, 05:21:35 PM »

I have had the DIR655 for several months.  When I first got it, I changed the passwords as good little boys are supposed to do. My network has moments where it appears to be saturated, where the work on one computer keeps the other from completing a connection, but since there are no good diagnostic tools for these types of problems, I have learned to live with it.  The problem I noticed today is that my password on the router was reset to the default, which I would never do.  I found this out accidentally when I couldn't log into the router with my password.  By chance, I left the password blank, and ouila, I was into the router.  I ran a few tests.  I reset the passwords via the tools screen, and logged in with the entered password.  I then went to the tools screen again, before I could do anything, the screen was replaced with one that had a message "Wait 20 seconds for settings to be made."  When I pressed the continue button, it happened again.  When I pressed the continue button a second time, I got a login screen.  My password was rejected.  Using an empty password was successful.  I retried the process and could enter my new password.  On that login screen, my new password worked.  Then I opened the tools screen and the process began again.  How do I permanently change my password and how do I keep this box from resetting itself to the default password?   This situation is SERIOUSLY upsetting.

How many people do you have on your router at once? Sounds like the ram is crashing. Check Status > Internet Sessions.

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

I would remove the WAN cable from the router, remove all other cables accept one wired PC. Turn off all wireless devices. Factory reset the router. Log in using a different browser to test with. Get in and set up the Admin and Wireless passwords. Change the Wireless SSID to something different, other than dlink. Can be anything, make it fun. Setup Wireless mode to Single mode G or Mixed G and N if you have N supported devcies. Set up Wireless security for Auto TPIK and AES. You can set for AES only which is preferred however you need to make sure all of your wireless devices support AES modes.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

After you set the router set up, do a Save configuration to file under Tools/System. Keep this file for later use.

Once you done, reconnect the ISP modem WAN cable and see what happens. Let us know how it goes.

At this moment in time, there are five sessions, two TCP on 1 IP address, and 1 TCP and 2 UDP on another IP address.  This RAM crashing idea sounds promising.  Periodically, my session stops responding when my granddaughter is on the internet on the other computer.

Hi,

As a thought, and I ask because we have seen this issue in here in the past....Does anybody have access to your router that would have the ability and knowledge to push the reset button without your knowledge ?

To diagnose saturation issues....  Shutdown (Power off) each PC in turn and see if things change for the better on the other PC's....  I have had a NIC go bad on a pc and flood my LAN with crap so that nobody else could do anything that need LAN use....Internet etc...

I have my 655 in vertical position as it seems to get better cooling....wireless creates a lot of heat inside the units....
