Hello!

While I'm copying a large file to my DNS-323, I am unable to browse the Internet or access my email. If I copy a very large file (let's say 5 GB), other computers on my network eventually lose access to the Internet before the file is done copying. Is there anyway to fix this?

I think my firmware version is 1.10 beta. I had a reason for updating to this version, but I cannot remember why.

From what you describe, it appears the file transfer is using all available bandwidth on your network. One solution is to configure your router to throttle or limit the bandwidth to/from particular devices on your network. If you are only performing large transfers from a particular PC, you may consider setting a bandwidth cap (through your router) for that one PC that will be low enough to ensure that large transfers will not cripple the rest of your network.

If the large file transfers are usually from the same computer and are going to the DNS-323, would a network switch help isolate the traffic? They are not that expensive and should help.

Describe the network - on a switched network (most networks today are switched), it should not be possible for a DNS-323 (or any other device) to bring the entire network down - on the other hand, if your network is built around older hardware, it could happen.

By the way - the router plays no part in communications on the local network - it will therefore not be possible to "cap" or in any way throttle bandwidth utilization between two devices on the local network, and your typical residential grade router will be unable to "segment" the network.
