Suggested Draft-N adapter (USB) for DIR-655?
« on: January 31, 2009, 02:54:09 PM »

Hi there,

Currently I am connecting to the DIR-655 on my main computer via a Linksys WRT54G running in "bridge mode". It's only a Wireless-G router though, so speeds could be better. So I am looking for a USB-based Wireless-N adapter. Can anyone recommend any specific models which have served them well when paired with the DIR-655?
If it matters, my main computer is one floor above my DIR-655.

I have reviewed the "300mbit requirements" thread, which makes sense to me (looks like I will only be using D-Link products) but it didn't have any particular recommendations which is what I am looking for. I can spend up to US$60-70.

Thank you

Hi LocutusX,

See this link: http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=530

All those products will connect to the DIR-655 without problems. However, I would stay away from USB Ethernet products. My own belief.  If you have a Laptop get a DWA-643 or DWA-652 Cards.

Hi,

I don't have a laptop, well I do but my main machine is a desktop. It's fairly old so it only has PCI slots. However I don't want to get a PCI-based adapter since I'll possibly upgrade to a new machine (with PCIe slots) sometime this year. Hence, the USB adapter makes the most sense for me. In addition, with USB I can plug it into my ol' laptop when I do choose to use it.

So is the DWA-140 considered "recommended" and pairs well with the DIR-655 to get 300mbps speed? Is there a noticeable performance/stability difference on that one versus the DWA-130 (cheaper by $5) or the DWA-160 (cost more by $20)?

The Linksys USB devices are a bit cheaper though, anyone have good luck with them (even if they don't allow "300mbit")?

A new machine will have both PCIe and PCI slots in it, I would get the PCI card (have 2 of them working here just fine) PCI slots will still be around for quite a while.  I think the performance will be much better with the card.

Hi LocutusX,

You will need to have one computer constantly wired to the D-Link Router or any router. Reason: Firmware Updates need to be done over a Wired Connection, not Wireless. Also if you lose the Wireless Connection, you need to be able to log into its settings to change or adjust.

When I purchased the D-Link DIR-655 Router, I did not buy the Wireless Adapter Card at the same Vendor, but searched around for the best price.

Why buy the D-Link DIR-655 High-Speed Router, if you don't want High-Speed?

All, in all, it is your Cash, your equipment and your decisions that you will need to live with. Get what you want.

This is a getting to be a little infuriating. Why does everyone insist on going off-topic and not paying attention to my original question?

To davevt31: A USB-based wireless NIC is required for those days I bring my work laptop home and desire to use it on my home network. That laptop's built-in G-adapter is of poor quality. So if you don't mind, I am not interested in hearing about PCI wireless NICs.

To thecreator: Why go off-topic and talk about wired network connections? It's nobody's business really, but since you seem to care so much; I already have a computer sitting beside the DIR-655, connected via a CAT5 cable. Yes, I would probably use that machine for firmware upgrades.

With regards to your next point, my question re: Linksys was more along the lines of "what exactly is the impact to my (real-world sustained) speeds if I get a Linksys N-adapter rather than a DLink N-adapter".

And yes - clearly, it is my cash which would go towards the upgrades - why wouldn't it be?  ???

Now, if there is anyone who wants to talk about USB-based wireless Draft-N adapters, then please pipe up! I really don't want to hear from anyone else.
I did not open this thread to solicit general advice on my system configuration.

Sorry, saw the "I don't have a laptop" but missed that you actually do.

I think most people have been steering you away from a USB device because there are reports that they don't perform as well as the a Wirless card.

I suggested the card as you said you we going to upgrade in the future and I wanted to make sure you knew that PCI slots will still be around for some time.

OK, well, thank you for that however I really need more evidence of USB WLAN adapters performing poorly for me to seriously consider a PCI card.
I have not heard anything like that...

I have a DIR655 and two pc's connected to it using DWA140's and I'm quite happy with this solution both computers connect at 300 mbps. Actual transfer rates are +/- 54mbps for larger files and that is a lot faster than most pre-N equipment can manage.

I am using the DIR-655 together with a couple of the USB DWA-140 and they work fine. I am able to get 300 Mbps connection speeds as long the signal is good enought.

I will try the DWA-547 which is a PCI-card and see if the performance on that one would be any better than the USB-adapter. However, I really believe the performance of the DWA-140 is as good as the equivalent PCI-card...  8)
