Hi all & Thanks in advance.

I hace 2 X 2TB drives in my 323.  After one failed I have replaced it with a new drive, formatted and resync is underway but has been running for 12 + hours and still says a little over 300 minute sync time remaining.  Firmware version is 1.09 and drives are Western Digital WD20EADS.  Anyone know how long the sync should take for this setup? 

Also, I can see the folders on the Volume_1 share (very slow) but am unable to access the files for a copy elsewhere etc. 

Any info/assistance appreciated.  Thanks

Any access to the drives during the sync significantly slows down the process. Reciprically, the sync sucks a lot of resources so any other access will be slow.

For best results do not access the device and disable any automated processes to allow the resync to complete in the shortest time possible.

Keep in mind that this device has limited resources available to it. A relatively slow CPU, limited RAM and an older HDD interface. It does a good job (IMO) but some things like a resync run slow.

It has been 35 hours and it still states 318 minutes sync time remaining.  Is this normal or is something wrong?  Both HD LEDs are flashing blue.

Hang in there, I went through this process not long ago and only had around 100 gigs to sync and it took at least 24hrs. 

Trust me on this, it will work but depending on how much data it has to sync back it could take up to 72hrs.  You may notice the time left jumping all over the place, But then as it gets closer to being done it will display say about 200 - 300 mins and then it will count down consisitently from there.

Whatever you do, don't hit cancel, call tech support, etc.  Like I said I went down the exact same path back in feb 2011 and made all the mistakes of trying to cancel it, shut it down, etc and the whole time it was doing it's thing I just wasn't patient.  Again, DO NOT call tech support as this will only frustrate the s*** out of you and you will get varying advice and several different stories.

I finally after a few calls to support insisted I speak to a higher level support specialist who knew his s*** and he said just leave it go and it will work, just very slowly.

  So, I did what he said and then finally I just left it for a day or so and voila it finally worked.

Just wanted to update in case it helps someone...  My sync did not ever complete (left for over a week) and even once received an e-mail form my sincere DNS-323 stating it was done but when accessed it said 100K min + remaining so I reformatted the 'new drive and left for over a week again with no luck.  In the end, I removed the 'new' drive to return to degraded status and copied the data I could to another drive.  Through this, I discovered there was some corrupt data on the disk that I was not able to copy so I assume this is where the rebuild was failing.  After salvaging what data I could I reformatted and rebuilt a RAID 1 array and all has been well so far.  Not a great warm and fuzzy experience but I guess I got what I paid for.  Fortunately in my case I had an off-site backup (a few months old) of my home movies and pictures so I was only out a few months of photos.  Could have been much worse.

First a question - did your data remain available even though the drive had failed and upto the point at which you replaced the failed drive?

If your answer is YES, then your RAID1 array worked as intended - that is all it is designed to do - reduce downtime caused by data being unavailable due to a disk failure - it's not intended to be a back up, and whilst an efficient & effective array rebuild/repair/restore procedure is desireable, it's not required.

In case you're curious, yes, I have had a failed disk in my DNS-323 and yes, the RAID rebuild went without a hitch - I've also swapped many failed disks in other RAID arrays, and some have rebuilt flawlessly, and others have crashed ignominiously.
